Hi Adam, your right about that the Folks here will get their livelihood back when the faucets open again. But is that really a good thing to be dependent on the money from foreigners? I have talked to many locals here, and they seem to be lost without tourist dollars. I think to myself, where is the Bali people working and helping each other? I ask about this and they say ,No way will they help or open their lives to benefit others! It’s all me, me and mine. So they go on and on, trapped in the same bubble of selfishness and greed. Remember when Canngu was just a beach! Remember when above Ubud it was all rice fields! Look at what happened because of greed and the never ending lust for more and more. This crisis was a good wake up call for everyone to change the sama sama attitude, but that, it seems will never happen. So bring the money train on! And watch what happens.
Hi Dennis,
I think it's easy to wax lyrical about how wonderful a place Bali would be without the tourists and how dependent Bali now is on the tourist dollar (rupiah?) but the simple fact is that (for better or worse) it contributes a huge proportion to the Balinese economy and most Balinese enjoy a lot better standard of living than a great deal of their Indonesian counterparts because of it. Want to see a version of Bali without the tourists? Theres plenty of them spread throughout Indonesia and while the people might be pleasant I can guarantee they are doing life tough and you would be bored shitless within days if you lived there.
The other thing to consider of course, is a great deal of the amenity that makes life possible/easier for most expats simply wouldn't be feasible without tourist patronage and support. I really wonder just how many expats in Bali could actually handle the warts and all Bali lifestyle without all the frills and trimmings that come from a great deal of tourism influenced westernization. Not many, I reckon.
I'm not saying any of this is a good thing or a bad thing, I'm just saying that it's the reality and I think it's a bit callous and selfish to celebrate the lack of tourists in Bali. And if the tourists aren't your thing, well, there's still plenty of the 'real' Bali out there to find, you just have to get off your arse and go looking.
