G'day, I'm 68 and retired in Australia. I've been travelling to Bali for many years now (pre COVID-19) and hope to retire in Tukadmungga as soon as I am allowed back to Bali. I had already started the process of selling up, here but now everything is on hold pending government policy changes.

Hi and welcome. We did our "new' retirement kitas whilst in Oz as our initial one expired and couldnt renew it. It was very easy and the only down side was the cost at double what we apid the previous year. Just choose an agent carefully as i have read that many people are being taken for a ride.

A very difficult time to make plans. The Australian government is talking of hopefully opening up the country again middle of next year but with the uncertainties raised with the new Covid variations, rules of the day can change the next day. One obvious difficulty will be to do with whatever quarantining requirements may be in place then. It seems almost certain that Indonesia will not be a Covid free country by mid next year so if your planning presumes several trips to and fro it probably means quarantining on any return to Australia. On the other hand waiting until things settle into some kind of reliable "new normal" may take some years. Good luck whatever your decisions. In the meantime if you use the search facility you can pick up lots of information already posted to do with property, leasing, visas or whatever

I would strongly recommend Bali Legals for any Kitas work. I arranged my Kitas through them and they were absolutely first rate. Maybe not the cheapest but at least they are legit

On the basis of what I have read I think 1. you can get permission to leave Australia if you will be away more than 3 months 2. you can enter Indonesia via Jakarta and quarantine if you have a KITAS (temporary resident visa) 3. I think that since the pandemic you can get a retirement KITAS while in Australia through an Indonesian Consulate - I am not 100% sure of this One Facebook page with useful info is called Law and Regulations in Indonesia There is useful general info on https://www.expat.or.id/index.html but it is not clear to me how much it has been updated for the current COVID situation Good luck

Thanks for the reply Ronb. I think I may have to try to go the way of applying for a KITAS from Australia. I have already purchased a house in Tukadmungga in my girlfriend (fiancé) name in January 2020 and haven’t been back to Bali since March 2020. Currently, the house is empty and I am paying my fiancé and members of her family as pembantu to clean the house and to support them. It would be far more economical if I was living there than living here and sending support to Bali as you can imagine. Applying for a KITAS I suppose I can change her payments from pembantu to appear as a rental agreement for the house. Wish me luck. I’ll keep you posted

I lived in Temukus west of Lovina from 2007-2010, and like North Bali very much, but from 2011 I have been based in Ubud. The Aussie web-site that mentions leaving for 3 months or more is https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/leaving-australia#:~:text=for%20business%20purposes-,Australians%20and%20permanent%20residents,unless%20you%20have%20an%20exemption.&text=your%20travel%20is%20as%20part,is%20for%20your%20business%2Femployer You have to apply and it looks like it will be best to do that when you already have a KITAS and can document your retirement plans. Some details of how to do this are in a document of the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra https://www.kbri-canberra.go.id/en/ It says you must work thru a sponsor (provided by an Immigration Agent in Indonesia) and submit the application on-line. Are you already working with an Indonesian Immigration agent? So you have to battle red tape of both governments but I think it is possible.

RonB Checking on that it says you must have a COMPELLING reason to leave. I guess if you are doing a one way trip , ie. retiring , it may work. Anyway good luck to the OP and keep us informed. Cheers Wistfully looking at retirement.. Ken
