The reasons for the Asus router are:
1. security - the Asus firmware is regularly updated and automatically installed. The ZTE modem/router from Telkom is 7 years old, has not received firmware updates, there have been security flaws that help phishers and these are fixed in ZTE firmware updates, but I don't think Telkom installs any updates. There are more security advantages with the Asus, but I won't go on. Since you're not using the ZTE as a wireless connection you could simply turn off the wireless and the only possible connection to the outside world would be through the fiber cable which is completely secure - you can't tap into fiber without destroying the connection, the last I'd heard? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the ZTE updates are automatic and carried out online (of course).
2. speed - all the wired connections are gigabit ethernet. I think the old ZTE here is 100 Mbit ethernet. The wifi of the Asus is quite strong which means faster connections compared to the ZTE and compared to the TP-link router I had before
Since you're using the ZTE simply as a fiber optic modem and connecting through ethernet with your ASUS, if the maximum speed you can get from ZTE is 100Mbit then your Asus is limited to that also isn't it?
Just trying to understand your setup so I can copycat you. Cheers
