Moving to Bali in May & Have a Few Questions

Have PT PMA and coming over on an investor kitas next month to operate a business and live there. (1) Do I need Japanese encephalitis vaccine? I will initially be living in Jimbaran up on a cliff although I am sure we will spend some time in Ubud and more remote areas. What vaccines do most get and should I get them there or before I come over? (2) Looking at purchasing both a new 7 seat SUV vehicle and perhaps a restored 1979 FJ40 Landcruiser that is for sale now in Bali. Are there any issues I need to be aware of about owning either? Will I be able to insure the 1979 and will transfer taxes be high on the 1979? (3) How are things there right now? Are a lot of businesses and eateries closed in the beach areas? Thanks.

Re (1), JE is rare, most people don't get vaccinated, but really, it's a decision for and your doctor. What vaccines should you get - COVID-19 for sure. Re (2), getting the SUV is straightforward. The other one could present hurdles. Re (3) Yes many businesses are closed but others still open. Life is OK but a bit quiet.

I believe the JE vaccine is recommended if you are living in rural areas or places with pigs. I know a student at my son's school got JE and while he survived it, I don't he will fully recover. Not so long after that, I believe all kids in Bali were vaccinated. I would discuss it with your doctor as Ron suggests and for sure get a Covid vaccine. I know those old Landcruisers are popular in Bali so probably not cheap if you were expecting it to be. If someone needs money quickly you might get something cheap. Any businesses that were specifically for tourists are mostly closed now. Apparently, a lot of nightlife in Canggu still going strong. Good luck with the move. It is certainly an interesting time to be in Bali right now.

Hi mate. Welcome to the forum. I too live in Jimbaran and as for businesses being open, everything is normal around here for the most part. A few of the big hotels and resorts are shut down or operating at a limited capacity but all the warungs and bars by Jimbaran beach are 100% open and packed for sunset every night. Like someone else said, if you go to the surfing meccas of Canggu or Uluwatu, you'd hardly even realize there was a pandemic going on. Business as usual over there. Regarding the cars, Landcruisers are not cheap at all over here. Way more than any western country. But if you got the money, which it sounds like you do, then have at it, my friend. Also, Indonesia imposes a "luxury" tax on SUVs and other nice cars. I believe it's between 10 - 30% a year depending on the car and the value of said car. (1) I've never heard of Japanese Encephalitis. Maybe I don't get out enough. Been living here for nearly two years and visiting for twenty and don't intend getting a vaccine against it. (2) Some great looking FJ40s around. I used to own one in the NT of Australia. Best 4wd I ever owned. Would I buy one here? Definitely not. You like sitting in traffic burning petrol with the aircon struggling? And a lot of roads your FJ40 just won't fit and nowhere to park it. I guess the same goes for your 7seater. I have a little suzuki ignis that I bought in case I want to go out at night or in the rain. Other than that I use my Honda ADV. I haven't driven the car in about two weeks. (3) If you have an income then Bali is great now. But tourist related businesses are suffering badly. Just take a look at the areas around Kuta Legian and Seminyak. 90% of places are closed. Sanur is probably better because I think they get more local (indonesian) tourism. Good luck.

Thanks brother. Definitely reach out. We are leaving probably around the 26th of May. Will book flights tomorrow. Then we have that whole 5 days in Jakarta thing. I was curious about the tax thing on the Landcruiser. Anyway to find out if it is 10% or 30% and do they go by bill of sale, market value or ?

Yep, Sam and Jack. That was the issue I had read about. I definitely want to do things correctly if possible. The FJ I am looking it is at a smaller dealer that seems to sell a lot of fully restored FJ40s, Jeeps and bigger motorcycles like Harleys. No idea how they handle the transfers or what paperwork looks like with them, but I would want it in my name or my businesses name if possible. I have seen a few ads that mention taxes paid for life? Any idea what they mean by that? Thanks so much for your help!

Well, it really all depends on who you are buying it from. A lot of people I know who bought used vehicles still have it in the original owners name since they want to avoid paying the [I]ongkos balik nama[/I] or change of ownership fee, which can be quite costly. So some people just avoid paying the tax altogether but I'm not sure if you want to go down that route. Best bet is to talk it over with the original owner or maybe even call a Toyota Dealership and see if they can consult you on the matter

I have gone through the change of ownership saga with my 2nd hand car. It is not so much the cost, it is the incomprehensible bureaucracy and multiple time wasting trips to various government offices that saps your will to live. It actually took me more than two months to complete the process probably because I am stubborn and wanted to do it myself. If I had to do it again i would pay someone to do it for me. But now my car is in my name instead of "Fanny". Yep, that was the name on the BPKB.

Only 5 days in Jakarta. No 14 day. Landed on the 21st around 11:30. Got to Mandarin hotel around 1:00. Cleared to leave around 10:00 am the 26th.

I've heard that it has started, but only for people coming from certain countries.

There was a recommendation of 14 days and I believe US was on that list maybe on May 17 or May 21. Think it was a recommendation not put in place yet, but something I heard about from wife so no details. We arrived on 21st from US and only did 5 day.
