The USA 44 State Powerball Lottery Winnings are estimated to be US$675 million. If won on Saturday this is a record. Of course, after tax etc, the winnings will dwindle to a mere half of that figure.I've always been interested, at dinner party conversations and pub chats, what people would do if they suddenly won this kind of money.I'll start by saying I'd buy out the Hatten Wine Co.....keep the same staff but make sure I got a better discount on a box of Rose that Matsaleh gets from her Kuta store... I'd also buy my wife a very salubrious spa/beauty salon as that would be her dream to own and manage. The rest of the money I'd just waste on a large yacht which I'd keep with a permanent crew on board......and probably a small helicopter. There have been numerous TV documentaries on the failures of many lottery winners and how their lives changed so dramatically that it ruined everything....so all is not as it appears.I'm hoping that members will chip in here with what they would do....or similar stories of what others did.

She did just that and was bankrupt a couple of years later. It's no surprise that you would buy this company and probably drink all the profits. As George Best once said when asked why he has spent everything" I spent a lot of booze fast cars and woman and I wasted the rest "IF I won I would buy every telco in Indonesia then disconnect ProfPaulLotsOfWind as well as buying all the land round his area and build free housing for gays then I would waste the rest.

Some years ago I saw a TV interview about a couple that had a big win near Chicago...they were ordinary folks and were asked what will they do with all that money. The wife said she'd buy a Winnebago (to those from UK that's a popular type motor-home). The guy stroked his beard and said "Am gonna get me a HOG (Harley Davidson motorbike) an hook it to the Winnebago."I recall checking and they could have bought-out both Companies and had some change....:ambivalence:

Apparently this lottery frenzy is on all the news channels in N. America but one that was amusing I've linked....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0iRYHL0byE

This must be the same one.DVT, your story just became BIGGER.US Powerball lottery jackpot soars to $1.3 billion
Thie lottery will be drawn in New York in just under 10 mins 10:59PM)...it may be seen live-streamed. I'll predict it'll be the most watched TV news....well maybe after the Kardashian sagas...:icon_rolleyes:

The winning numbers are 32; 16; 19; 57; 34 and powerball 13.The cash payout will be US$558 million....good luck to someone deserving.I guess it will take a while to see if anyone has won and in which part of the country.....I'll bet the winners keep quiet until the media frenzy dies...but it'll be hard to keep that info down.

Thanks. Heck, that's huge. It's a life-changing amount for pretty much anyone.I hope it was my friend Doris. She deserves it.
If Doris wins please can you give me her email....I'd like to show her the picture of the yacht she might wish to buy...and get me to skipper.

Ha HaShe is deeply religious and will be focusing on the Church and family.Even though she lives by a river (the Mississippi) I doubt she'd be into boating. Will keep you in the loop on Doris. I will hear soon from her if she did win it.
Nobody won....the jackpot continues to Wednesday where the winnings are estimated to be US$1.3 Billion.Notwithstanding 'Doris' and her pious convictions I didn't expect to hear from you....Mississippi is not included in the Powerball Lottery. She would need to cross the State line (not Alabama) to buy a ticket....For those interested here's a link to the powerball frenzy currently active in tha USA....Powerball jackpot soars past $1 billion, shattering previous records - Hartford Courant

Can we buy a ticket from here? Online with credit card?
Nope...must be bought from a State that complies with Powerball. Those States that do not are....Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming although I believe Wyoming is processing a change. Apparently there are line-ups on the Interstates between those that are not involved and the border ticket sellers in States that do sell are sold out....no more paper to make the tickets.I'm not a gambling man...but I'd love having a $2 ticket and going to sleep dreaming of what to do with the money.

I was referring to the river which ties to your use of the word yacht.
The kind of yacht I imagine 'Doris' would buy with her lottery win, so I can be her skipper, wouldn't fit the upper Mississippi river.....:cupcake:

Doris said to me it would be problematic if I won so she is just going to buy me a $2 ticket and let it go at that. I still feel good about it. With my luck and her 'faith' we might just do it.
I don't see any problem...if you win just return the two bucks and give her a small tip.If I were you I'd ask to be paid in Rupiahs...lets see......US$1,4 billion X IDR14,000 = help...my calculator just blew-up. Why just be a billionaire when you can be a quadrillionaire...:icon_wink:

Another interesting statistic; your chances of getting struck by lightning are 150 bigger than your chances of winning the lottery.
davita
The winning numbers for the US$1.5 billion prize....4; 8; 19; 27; 34 and the powerball is 10.Better check with Doris if she has those numbers.
davita
It appears at least one ticket with winning numbers was sold in Chino, California. Of course there may be others...just have to wait.Didn't PSW say Doris was currently in California....could be time to get excited.edit: The reason there could be numerous winners is because the lottery can have random numbers chosen by computer or players can input their own lucky numbers....it's a choice.

Interesting this couple from Tennessee have come forward to say they won the third prize ticket of US$530 million...Tennessee Powerball winners: No big changes to lives - AOLLike I implied on my first post......they say their life will not change...they intend to stay in the house they live and try to be normal. I say that is IMPOSSIBLE and so do all the actuaries that have followed lottery winners.

Give it to somebody who will appreciate it and spend it to keep the money ball rolling. Putting it in a bank account and living your "normal" boring life should be designated a crime against humanity. It's like those people who go fishing and then release the fish they catch back into the sea. That drives me bonkers. If I win the lottery, watch out!!!!

Fish can be expensive.A friend of mine keeps a boat in Benoa and goes fishing. Recently he caught a Tuna, cut it into steaks then BBQd and invited us over for dinner.I really enjoyed the fish but contemplated the capital cost and depreciation of his boat; the insurance; the maintenance; the fuel bill; the moorage fees; the payment to the boat-boy he always takes with him...and savored the fish even more on realizing it was probably the most costly fish I'd ever tasted.
