Trying to get Home to Bali - Options?

Dude what kind of luggage are you imagining? I take for 1 month tours - 2 shorts (gave up on undies years ago - to fecking hot) 3 - 5 shirts (depending on what's not at the laundry when I go) sandals (usually on feet) and med kit. Job done. Now if you need to take a douche bag, make up kit, undies for those special occasions and full fat yogurt for when you get Thrush then perhaps get a side car too but you will pay a fecking fortune to get that 600 cc rocket over here and be a magnet for every local cop needing to better his monthly stipend, cause if no one has told you yet they are fecking illegal here - max allowable under Indo law is 250cc. Anything above that and they will find you (Liam Nelson voice) and make you pay.

Point taken guys. I'll rent. Good advice. I've got camera equipment and working on a website www.travelwithneal.com and need a computer with me .I travel light and leave my douche bag at home when traveling.so just need small bags. I'm in Candidasa for a month with a small backpack and that is all. You fuckers are making sense to me though so again, thanks, mates.

Vespas are great if you are a short Italian guy but for us tall people who near the 2-meter mark, an NMAX is the only way to go.

Beg to differ my friend, the rider is too exposed on a small scooter, no protection for a collision, no power to get out of tight situations. But all that really matters is that you like the bike you are riding :cool:

IT'S A FECKING NMAX from Honda - same design, look and the seat's identical. ! Oh and those side case, hold feck all, maybe a beach towel if you're lucky and it's small. I understand it has the same underpowered motor as the PCX so I'll just say test drive an Nmax first. My mate also bought a 2 year later Nmax and has had problems with the seat too - so he choppped and changed his (inserts) until he got the perfect sit and then gave it to the local Sadel guy to stitch up fine. In my opinion he's just a pussy and needs to stop every half hour for a smoke...

Old men haggling over motorcycles... Hell, last time I drove a moped I was 15 y old. Cant see me driving one here.. too hot, no way. Rain, no way. Pub or restaurant and a few drinks, no way. Shopping more than 3 kg, no way. So that's already 80% of options eliminated. At 68, Grab or BB are just fine. Could rent a car, but have driven enough in 3rd world countries and the "excitement" has worn off... But to each his own as the saying goes !

Yeah, kind of. I got ABS when the bike was new and thought it was cheap enough to just take it as it was only a 2 juta extra in price. Luckily almost never used it and after 4/5 years the damned thing went south and caused other issues in its going. Looked into getting it fixed thinking it would be relatively simple - wrong! And it seems to be an inbuilt weakness that they all may have.

Big bikes in Indonesia are for the rich, you can buy a car cheaper than a big bike. Lots of illegal bikes with no rego for sale, people will just take them out one club days. Remember here if it has not been registered for 10 years and you buy it you have to pay for the last 10 years before you can register it. You can buy New for 300+juta for the Yahama Tmax (500cc) or 450+ juta for Honda ADV (750cc)(we brought a house for 350 juta last month) if you want to spend more Surabaya has a Ducati shop. For people like myself (Nmax,PCX,ADV) 155cc gets you everywhere and I would hate to be the bearer of bad news but the Honda engine is smoother. I do ride the yahama 155 aerox most of the time.

Thank you so much for all the great information. Truly a great forum here! Based on the information you guys have presented, I've decided to cancel getting a bike. I'm happy enough enjoying Balinese paradise without the headaches and costs of owning a motorcycle.

Sorry to disappoint you but any big bike out of the norm here is a cop magnet. Having traveled here fairly extensively on a 155cc Nmax I can assure you that that's all the bike anyone needs for Indonesia's small and crowded roads. You can not physically go any faster than 155cc will carry you - safely. Friends (Balinese) have these big bikes and are continuously paying out bribes to officials and police for the "privilege" of driving outside the law - Indo law stipulates no bike larger than 250cc. You will be safer, more comfortable and just as fast on a much smaller road-legal Nmax or similar.

You will drive definitely safer and just as fast on Bali roads. More Comfortable? Depends. A Harley Davidson seat can be super comfy. I had a 1600 cc Fatboy with a Screaming Eagle exhaust. Ok like 10 years ago. Police officers these days were my very best friends! Perhaps it was because I always wore a leather jacket, long trousers and opaque dark helmet. Never got stopped but saluted often ;) perhaps I looked like somebody else :cool:
