I feel obliged to reply to this as most of what you have referred to goes back to something I wrote earlier and if someone reads this in a week or 10 days time it won't make as much sense. So here goes: In my experience we all are walking around with our heads on a fishbowl. Now what "reality" is playing on the inside of that fishbowl for us to see is an equal mixture of our prejudices, learning, emotions and experiences of life and actually some of what may be going on in the "real world" whatever/where ever that may be.So if you think that you are getting cheated because you don't speak the lingo here then it's probably true. So if you think you are getting charged double and triple because you are white then it's probably true. If your Ketut thinks you were injured because you trimmed the tree then it's pr.... you get the idea. All of the things we experience here are probably true. Here it comes.... for each of us individually in our fishbowls but not for all of us. For instance my local friends take this whole Black Magic with a large pinch of salt because when I ask about it they see I don't believe either. As for prices I actually have found that often I can get better prices than some of the locals because I'm not too shy or proud (middle classes here are often too proud to show then care about money enough to bargain) to bargain and as to paying 2 or 3 times more - [I]never[/I]. I'd also say that from all the other islands on the planet there will be minus and plus points to living there but only having one life I'm reasonably happy with my fishbowl's view of this one. But what do I know?
