Was in Canggu last week, and it was a different world from what I have viewed elsewhere in Bali currently. It was business as usual with only a minority of these expats wearing face masks. A selfish attitude in the least, and with the knowledge of what their behavior could expand to, an arrogance against the rest of humanity which is so contrary to what these idiots frequently espouse.

Luckily (?) we have bags of masks (N95) left over from the last, but one, "disaster" when Agung was exploding. Never doubt there's a silver lining around every disaster - you just need to last long enough to find it.

Hang on a minute. There is absolutely no hard scientific evidence that wearing a mask in general public spaces like supermarkets, streets, beaches etc. has any noticable affect on transmission rates. None whatsoever. So before condemning ordinary people as sociopaths for going about their lives just take a deep breath and think about what was considered normal just a few weeks ago. The US Centre for Disease Control just a few weeks ago was advising people NOT to wear masks unless they were infected. I don't wear a mask when going to the supermarket. And you are condemning me and people like me as enemies of humanity?? Get a grip on yourselves and look at the data and the facts, not sensational stories being paraded in the media. Calm down everybody. Good luck to everyone in this current global madness.

The US Centre for Disease Control was advising people to not wear masks unless they were infected because there is a MAJOR SHORTAGE OF MASKS IN AMERICA. They wanted to prevent the toilet paper scenario from happening there so they sent out a press release to everyone saying this bullshit about masks. Of course, wearing a mask helps prevent the disease. Granted, it should be the proper type of mask (e.g. N95 or something of high quality) but even the shittiest of masks will help at least a little more than no mask at all.

Sam we live here and are expected to wear masks now when out and about. My complaint was with people who just wouldn't go with what has been requested by the the govt. in charge. I erred undoubtedly by referring to them as expats as from their age and activities (surf boards in tow) they were undoubtedly tourists. If you have a gripe it is with the law we are expected to abide by in this land in which as expats we are foreigners. The CDC has changed their stance in the US, not that it has a damned thing to do with Indonesia, except that as with Indonesia it is what is now prescribed. If a person ignores this edict they not only expose themselves, but if by doing so become infected they become someone capable of exposing others, as well as requiring medical assistance, hospital bed usage and other demands as an imposition to society. Do you really have a problem in opposition to that?

I don't need you TO SHOUT AT ME. I have heard this explanation. I follow what is happening in the US very closely. I understand that CDC changed their recommendations due to changing data. But there is still no scientific evidence that wearing masks in open air public places has any affect on transmission rates. Not one scientific paper has been published. So why are public policy decisions being made based on zero evidence? Generational changing decisions are being made based on nothing other than political expediency. That is my argument Jackstraw, with all due respect.

[ATTACH type="full" alt="3357"]3357[/ATTACH] SamD, you may be right there is no official scientific study showing the effectiveness of masks but you don't need to be an infectious disease expert to read a simple chart like the one above. For me, the choice is simple. Whether it helps or not, I will take my chances and take the 2 fucking seconds to put the mask on. If not for myself, it's for the respect of others.

These are times for lots of irrational behaviour with "experts" contradicting each other and governments wanting to be seen to responding to a crisis by acting even if the actions may not make a lot of sense or achieve much. The spraying craze continues even though the President's health advisory panel has suggested there is no evidence to show it is effective but there is evidence that it can cause skin rashes and be harmful to the eyes. But Hey, the government is seen to be conspicuously active. As for masks, it is now law and more people seem to be wearing masks. I have doubts about their effectiveness but now it is mandatory and by not wearing a mask I might get clobbered by a local. I guess some of you may have seen the Indonesian news clip of a fellow being so indignant at a hospital when finding a nurse, receptionist not wearing a mask he slapped her face. He was imprisoned for assault. Not sure that he would have gone to gaol for slapping the face of a bule not wearing a mask. Social distancing certainly presents problems. To avoid people being to close on the trains, people are held back in a packed mass until the train area clears a little. Closing beaches I suppose makes some sense as a means of discouraging people from leaving their houses but it seems a pity when there are so few people wanting to use the beaches. I miss a swim and a good walk. Unfortunately I think this is going to take a year and probably more before restrictions disappear. We are living in a different world so whatever your choices be mindful that there is a fair bit of hysteria in the air potentially every bit as dangerous to your well being as the Corona virus.

Judging by comments in various FB Bali sites, this has been creating a lot of ill will towards foreigners in general. As guests in this country, we have an obligation to be culturally sensitive and follow the law of the land, and therefore anyone thinking it's ok to give two fingers to the feelings of our hosts, and to the instructions of the Indonesian government, by refusing to wear a mask does not, in my view, have the right attitude to live here. As for locals not wearing masks, let their compatriots deal with them.
