Covid-19 current situation in Bali

Seminyak/Legian maybe 75% of the tourist related busineses closed, some still opening their doors but you would have to ask why: the streets are virtually empty. Beach entrances are barricaded but a few people still using them. I went for a run myself from Seminyak beach to Kuta beach and saw perhaps 20 people. Bintang supermarket instituted a socisl distancing measure at their checkout which is admirable but, more than likely, quite pointless given that people are squeezing past each other in the aisles.

Worth watching and listening to this intellectual perspective…

Went south yesterday and found a mixed bag. Was surprised to see many bule tourists in Canggu, the majority without masks giving the impression of life as usual. From there drove Sunset Rd. and amazingly sparse traffic for that location early in the day. Many restaurants were closed, and the few open for take-out only. Driving back to Jembrana was surprised at truck traffic homeward bound to Java still reasonably heavy albeit less than normal. One unexpected item was passing an empty transport trailer whose burden of either automobiles or bikes now emptied was on its return trip. Perhaps the vehicles had been ordered prior to the letdown. Life in a small village hasn't changed much except for the prevalence of masks.

Revise my estimate of closed businesses to now 90%. And the Pecalang have reinforced their beach entrance barricades so that I was unable to go for a run without an ostentatious display of civil disobedience. So the one place where we could easily exercise social distancing has now been closed off. What kind of madness are we living in?

You know what I did when I couldn't go for my run? I went to the pub. I didn't go to the pub to deliberately make a statenent but that is what I did So what is the difference that closing the beaches is making to help the fight against coronavirus? I can tell you. Fuck all. It is actually making it worse by forcing people into closer contact. I give up. I'm too old to stand for parliament. Sort it out yourselves. Cheers Sam

What are you seeing in Bali and what is your experience with virus? I don't know anyone here in Bali affected, at least medically by the virus. Obviously, the economic impact is huge. I was at the local hospital last week for something not virus related. Everyone was wearing masks and keeping distance and it didn't seem overly busy. Just some of my own thoughts... Many Chinese were visiting Bali around Christmas, New Year and maybe the virus spread then. I know I was sick early January and I have heard some people also talking about this. Maybe it's possible the virus spread through early this time. Yes I agree. But sometimes I also have to be a grumpy old Scotsman. I love the Balinese (I married one) but they don't have a monopoly on common sense. Stay safe, as they say these days.

[B]Sanur.[/B] Many places closed, but not all. Some are "temporary closed", "temporary open", or both at the same time. "Social distancing" either [B]is[/B] or [B]isn't[/B] (again at the same time). Just came back from a trip to the Sukawati markets (halfway between Sanur and Ubud), to collect some things. Took us 15 minutes from Sanur to Sukawati (usually 25 minutes). The traffic was a breeze (reminded me of driving in the good old days). The Sukawati markets were mostly empty and closed. No idea why [I]some[/I] were 'open' with no buyers to be seen. (We'd arranged to collect our items beforehand and it went fine.) I haven't walked around where we [I]actually[/I] live (the "dark" side of Sanur across from the beach side). Still, spotted some food warungs jam packed with locals. Uh-huh. :cool:

Thanks Mark. Apparently the 2 deaths are the for the same 2 foreigners with serious underlying problems that we have known about for some time, and the 79 reported positive include a number of returning cruise liner workers who were returning home and were tested at the airport. The latter is an assumption on my part as some reports fail to divulge much more info. than raw numbers.

Just came back from shopping in Jimbaran, Bali Jaya and it is now noticeable that most people are wearing masks whereas a few days ago it might have been 20%. I just wish we could go for a swim at Jimbaran beach as before they closed there were very few people around.

I guess they are getting some heat from everybody but if they want to take away our freedoms for no logical reason that I can see, then what do they expect?

Something wrong with you old man. I never tried to get on the beach. I only asked them when it would be open again. You obviously have some issues but I suggest you stop the abuse. You know nothing about me.
