Anyone know where I can get some of the above. Particularly the night time paintings, but really any of Bali.

Hati Hati! There are many fakes of the early group of European artists of Bali, as I am sure you are aware and good lithographs are included. Don't wish to discourage you, and wish I could help. Honestly don't know of a valid source.

Litho or even posters, as long as they are good quality prints would do fine.Markit

Going slightly off topic Singapore has just opened a SE Asia National Gallery that looks worth a visit. Singapore opens 250m National Gallery - BBC News

A suggestion. Find some large images of what you like and copy them to your computer. Open them in Photoshop and resize them using the bicubic soft preset. Save the results as TIFFs. Copy them to a flash disk and get them printed at a print shop. (Before doing that, you could ask the print shop what colour profiles they prefer, eg, Adobe RGB 1998, sRGB, etc. But they're likely to have Photoshop anyway and the profile can be converted from there.)Of course, you could always modify the originals with different filters to remove grunge, crop edges, denoise, etc. There is some software that specialises in resizing images and the results can be quite astonishing (eg, Photozoom Pro, Pefrect Resize 9, etc).Enlarging images to big sizes on your own computer can tax it. Ideally you should have a fair chunk of RAM and a decent graphics card. If not, it can take quite a while (depending on how big you want the final, printable result to be).I found a couple of images and did some blow-ups (haven't printed them - just to give you some ideas). And yes, I am fully aware of the **** in-**** out saying. However, image enlargement algorithms have come a long way.http://i.imgur.com/JIdQRn4.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/3qy8ARZ.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/0kluo6G.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/bgZKjGs.jpg

Thanks Johnny is there a print shop in Sanur you recommend? Mine here in the pampas don't have the type of large format inkjet printer for the job.

There used to be a really good place in Hardy`s,had several prints enlarged there but that was almost 3 yrs ago,im sure they are still there

I use Mercy Photos 58 Jl Danau Tamblingan in Sanur. Only used them for normal sized photos from a flashdrive. Their walls display samples of what they do. Some very large. Posters etc.

Thanks Johnny is there a print shop in Sanur you recommend? Mine here in the pampas don't have the type of large format inkjet printer for the job.
There are two main printers in Sanur. I haven't used them to print large photos so can't comment on their quality or prices.1. Mercy Photo (Jalan Tamblingan)2. A relatively new one on the ByPass directly opposite McD.A little outside of Sanur proper is a highly recommended one: daitoprinting, Jalan Hayam Wuruk 230, DenpasarGoing South on the ByPass, turn right at KFC into Jalan Hang TuahContinue to the first roundabout and turn right into Jl Hayam WarukIt's on the left-hand side, maybe 300-400 m along. There are literally hundreds of printing services in the South, new ones cropping up everywhere. Good luck. The image below is not by Walter Spies. Just another one I grabbed off the net yesterday.http://i.imgur.com/TwUdCFj.jpg

Had to pop into Sanur briefly and dropped into the printing service opposite McD (it's called Jaya), to check prices, etc. The maximum image height they can print is 90 cm, and any width (they print on a roll). So, I asked them how much for an A0 sized print. Picked one of their expensive "papers" and it was about Rp 368,000 (laminated). The A0 "standard" varies across the world. Normally, it should be 84.1 x 118.9 cms (33x47 inches). If I bring you an image file, what format should it be in? They told me it didn't matter because it's "digital printing", but they prefer a PDF. Huh? I could be wrong but I don't consider PDF as a suitable format to print a photo with good quality. My basic impression of this joint is that they don't seem to know much, so possibly best avoided.I blew up the following found image to 106x71 cm in Photoshop CS6 with a small tweak using Topaz Adjust.

I know it's almost impossible to check the quality of your "blow up" without printing it but if you boosted the size on your PC up to the approx size you've mentioned does it pixilate badely? That would be an indication of the quality before spending $30 on it first - that's a lot of Binnies to waste. Oh and what sort of file size is that giving please?

Some of the files I've enlarged come in at 75+ MB. Could even be bigger if I spent time on them. And you're right - the acid test is printing one and seeing the result. There are other factors involved when enlarging images and there's a lot of confusion about this. "Resolution", dpi (for printing), etc. Mixed terminologies, if you will. Bump up the resolution and surprising things can happen (not always good). The bottom line becomes what the enlarged image is destined for, eg, a printer, (what kind?), a web image? You've got me going here now - I am not an expert. A while back, I wanted to blowup and print some images. I found a small place somewhere in the Panjer district that had a special on at the time. The prints were excellent and extremely affordable.Tell you what. I will take one of scabbed Spies' images and spend some more time removing artifacts, extra tweaking 'til I get it "right", get it printed and see what happens. I know a guy from Lombok who's been living and working in Sanur for many years. Gave up his bar job to branch out into "graphic design" and printing. He kind of subcontracts the printing part out to other people (with the necessary equipment).I wanted to know what he could come up with. Last time I talked to him we made a "deal". I would send him an image - he would do the best printing job he and his partners could manage. This "project" could be a good test, and who knows - maybe I'll get a good print.Grabbing images off the internet is not ideal. Typically, if you're lucky, you'll get a 400 KB JPEG. The first thing I do is convert it to a TIFF because stuffing around with a small JPEG (compressed already), makes every change worse.I'll do this over the next week - the heat is getting me down lately - and when I get a result, I'll let you know.:drunk:

Johnny I can't thank you enough for your kind help in this. I've been looking all over the internet and frankly the results are meager to say the least. This copy is the best one I've been able to find at 354kb:But if anyone has access to larger (anything over 300kb really) of these then please shout out or if you know where on Bali they are hanging I'll just pop over and snap away on my own...?Sumatra I particularly love this next one and everyone's favorite - and and But also is particularly Balinese with the Penjur. Don't be a cheapskate. You can pick one up cheap at Sotheby's for only $USD 5,000,000Walter Spies | lot | Sotheby's

There are some Walter Spies originals hanging in Museum Puri Lukisan in jalan raya Ubud and also at the Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) in Pengosekan. However, I doubt they will allow you take photos but maybe they can give you an idea where to find copies or lithographs.Museum Puri Lukisan Ubud School of PaintingMuseum | A Living Tradition

Another method would be to find some good quality art books/art gallery catalogues and scan the images directly from them. Plus you get to read the books. It's a real pity there are so few lending libraries in Bali. Some people tried privately, years ago and found that many Balinese kept the books. (Misunderstanding?) There is one still going in Ubud, adjacent to the main soccer field on Monkey Forest Road. Definitely worth a visit.Pondok Pekak Library & Learning Center ? OUR LIBRARYYou have to pay a deposit, etc.The main public "library" in Teuku Umar, Denpasar is a total joke.Pick up a book and it's likely to crumble in your fingers. The catalog system is even worse. They have daily newspapers, and teenagers groping each other among the stacks. Some university libraries are thankfully better. Glad I'm not a student in one of them.

I'm off to Ubud and their museums today and in the spirit of social media I will be having lunch at Mama Mia Pizzas (best pizza on Bali, pictures to follow) washed back/down/around by lashings of Bintang with a Dutch bud.
