This was a case earlier this week of a young lady who was "missing". Thankfully she turned up safe but had had her phone/ipad stolen:

I think it is a sign of the times if we aren't seen online in the past 24 hours then people start to worry.
I don't know if it is right or wrong to start panicking and spreading 'missing person' types of posts. In the case of
Philippine lady who went missing and whose body was just found more recently, more could have been done to help her.
I remember in my early days of traveling writing letters and sending postcards, which would could take weeks for my family to receive.
