I Bank with Mandiri, Saving and term deposits.
I ask about a credit card and was told I would have to deposit the amount into my saving account and they would block the amount of credit I asked for. My term deposits out way the credit amount i asked for.o_O
In terms of loans/mortgage I don' t have a income in Indonesia so no luck (i can use my brother inlaw name). Most loans are under 10 years.
The bank sends me the latest foreclosure on houses because they want me to invest but not willing to loan:rolleyes:
Do you use Banks or is Cash still King?

I use my debit card more frequently, simply for for the convenience. Most places never have change, which is annoying (Where does it all go I wonder?) I have never bothered with a credit card here for the reason you mention.

I have a debit card with BCA and then thought I would get a local Visa "credit card" so that I would not lose money on poor exchange rates if I used my Aus credit cards for things like buying an on line flights in Indonesia. But then with having funds frozen in my savings account how is the local Visa card a "credit card"? Basically it seemed just to be another debit card except that I would pay interest on purchases so I later cancelled it.
I am easily confused so maybe I missed something?

My wife is always asked to open bank accounts but they also ask if you husband will runaway to his home country??
The banks think we are dodgy for some reason, I think they have been burnt by westerners in the past.
I don't use my Aust CC in here, but do get good deals using your local account and sending money from my aust saving to my Mandiri account gives a good rate.

Fred, I hope you are using Transfer Wise?

I use cash. Mrs bank account BCA is empty unless i put money in it, so to purchase tokopedia go jek food (more bonuses) I put money over to her BCA and use. Wouldn't mind having my own but I"m sure I read somewhere Indonesian bank accounts bear high interested in comparison with Australia.
For getting low amounts of money to bali WU seems to still have slightly better rate than tranferwise, but transferwise definitley better for $500 upwards.
For the airline tickets harry, just use Australian VPN.
I try to avoid using VISA (AUS) here at all, but it's handy to know I have it.

Sticky question.
I send my girlfriend money regularly (monthly) but she's not financially savvy and keeps lending? It to her brothers. Any suggestions on how to get around this. I know and get on well with her mum and brothers.

I'm sure this question has been asked many times but being a relatively new boy I need to ask.
Firstly, how does an expat open a bank account in Bali. I want to be able to transfer money from my account in Australia to an account in Bali.
Secondly, if I want bring enough money into Bali in order to set up a rental property can anyone suggest the best method other than having a bank account to transfer it to.
Thanks for any advice.

To open a account just take your Kitas/kitap(passport) to the bank. ANZ , HSBC may have easy ways to transfer between accounts, I find transfer wise is best.
When I paid for our house in Surabaya, I left Australia with pockets full of cash. I declared on the Australian paper work (more than $10,000), put it into a Australian dollar account in Bali and waited for the best rate then converted to Rp

You can open a Permata account without a Kitas. It is very easy if you have a friend that can refer you or as I did be nice and they let me open one and they referred me. I agree with Fred that transferwise is they way to go once you have a Indo account
