It is clear from Mr Ellam's statement that his intention is to return again later to Bali and continue his idyllic lifestyle. He more or less says he is trapped and desperate to get out and this is why he is asking for help but there is no suggestion of repaying people. He makes it clear that as soon as he gets past this issue he will then take steps to return so basically he is asking people to underwrite a proposed continuing lifestyle in Bali. Clearly the need to then get together a return ticket and funding has a much greater imperative than thinking of paying back any "good Samaritans."

If somebody is too ignorant tp follow the (quite strict) regulations in Indonesia he/she should pay.

Does anyone know what happens to someone (from a 1st world country) if they overstay and simply cannot pay? (and they are not clever enough to use Gofundme) I would suspect some jail time, before being deported/blacklisted. Anyone know or care to speculate?

I have to disagree spicy. Any half intelligent adult ought to be able to manage their visa situation. Granted, Indonesia makes it so easy to 'live' here with temporary social visit visas that many get sucked into thinking that Indonesia is actally their home and therefore become careless with their very limited permission to stay. However, this chap could have done a cheap visa run to Singapore or Malaysia to sort himself out with a VOA instead of behaving like an errant school boy and dodging his legal responsibilities. Now he wants others to clean up his shit, which is wrong.

I had to read the go fund me page 4 times Then I waited for the late April fools joke!!! Then I waited for the fake news!!!! Now 8 hours later its true & peanuts are giving this guy money(I will start a go fund me for retirement) So he's a digital nomad working out of Bali, he stuffs up & its everyone else fault? He is the Founder & MD of 3 companies and he can't do a simple visa, If the British government allowed him to travel then they should be made to pay. Its only fair. I think as global citizen we should ring Indonesian Immigration on (1800theydontgiveafuuk) and complain bitterly about there unforgiving attitude, Were British we should not have to PAY they should be great full that we visit the backward Island. I mean it only happened 6 months ago to a British citizen(unjust law) I have just written out a cheque for 1 million, I will send it by Indopost he should get it tomorrow. :)

Bali governor is concerned tourist numbers are down again,,,visitors are concerned regarding cost,,,overstay 100 Aud per day ,,can easily happen ,can just be a mistake in bookings,,and as you have said ,,jail time,deporting and blacklist, pretty nasty governor,, And negative ,its putting tourists off.

The governor is not alone. There are many places which love the money but hate the tourists.

Immigration is national government, so I don't believe the governor has anything to do with the overstay fees.

I would challenge you to find one tourist in Bali who has ever thought about overstay fees when deciding if they will book or not. It is not an issue except for losers and chancers.
