That's a good summary. Canggu is more trendy, less boring. But far more traffic and more dangerous (plenty of crazy and drunken driver). Sanur is relaxing, beautiful beach (for Bali standards) with no waves (there's a wave however somewhere far out).
If I would want to raise kids I'd choose Sanur (some people call it "snore" but they must be party people) or a place more north of Canggu or Berawa (problem is here you just have ONE street (Jalan Canggu) if it's clogged there's no way around with a car and you WANT to sit in a car with kids) or Kerobokan (that's what I did; close to Denpasar, Canggu AND Seminyak, plenty of shortcuts and bypasses) ;)
