spicyayam Our house is too small and the only solution we have now is to build up. Does anyone have any advice for this? One challenge is the house is that 2 of the walls are built right on the neighboring boundary, which is vacant.
Nydave Depends on your foundations, are they strong enough to support the extra weight of another floor,
sakumabali Bali 2.0 : if you put a floor up you need to apply for a new (!) building permit. Even if the neighbor plot is empty it does have an owner who must sign the IMB. If he doesn't want to sign 2 meter gap is necessary. I would weigh my chances with the owner before I'd make any (perhaps expensive) decisions...
spicyayam Thanks for that. It gave me an idea, since we have high ceilings and a high pitched roof, I was thinking maybe we could build a loft type of space. We want it just for bedrooms so I think that could work and it should work out cheaper.
spicyayam Nydave wrote Good thinking, you can also install dormer type windows for natural light Yeah. Have you seen anything like that in Indonesia/Bali?
Nydave To be honest I dont be looking, but as you know its very common in our countries, and very easy to do if you have the right people doing the work.i have done a couple in the past,, I'm assuming you have a tiled roof, and the problem here in Indo is that they dont use felt under the tiles and also they try to stretch the coverage of the tile to the max resulting in a lot of leaks, roof tiles should be over lapped by about 3",,,, So if you go with dormer windows it means doing some work on the roof,i would suggest replacing the tiles and putting felt under the tile, and when putting the new tile make sure the tiles are properly over lapped, If you google how much over lap roof tiles should have you will see what im talking about,
