Collecting on a debt from US

My wife did some legal work for someone in the US. They have paid half the invoice and the balance is remaining. They may still pay, but they are no longer responding to calls/texts. I would like to know if we have any options for collecting the money. Would it be possible to get a debt collector? It is just frustrating as they were so demanding and then when there was mention of the final payment, they have gone silent.

If you are saying that they are n the US now your chances are slim. The reasons are that debt collectors have limitations due to laws limiting harassment, and you have little recourse via the courts so most debt collectors only accept something for which they can receive a percentage of settlement for their fee.

Forget it, there's no way you can prove that the debt actually exists if they say it doesn't. If you were in the US it would be (maybe) different then you could chase them through the small claims court and there would be a valid paper chain.

Even if you were in the US it would be difficult unless you had a sound case in accordance with international acceptance. If an individual works as an employee in the US he/she may be garnished for wages because of unpaid debt. That means the employer would reduce the wage within the amount of the debt. If it were a large employer it could result in firing. If a small employer certainly an embarrassment. On the debtor's side would be an avoidance of those circumstances assuming that you have a viable case, and they would want to settle. What is related here is in accordance with the law of Washington State; other states may differ.

Apparently there is a small collection agency in the states that has had very good success. Not sure of the contact details but try googling Mafia...good luck
