Bali is one island in the archipeligo ,with all the usual problems of a developing country , beaurocracy, some corruption ,unreliable legal system ,health care which is "a bit of a lottery" etc ,not so different to many countries of this classification ,in asia africa . As long as you are prepared for this no problem . Is that your idea of paradise ??? definition of parasie cambridge dictionary a place or condition of great happiness where everything is exactly as you would like it to be:

What I’d like to know is how monkeys got it in the first place? Reminds me of the chicken-egg question. Which came first? The virus or the monkey? If the former, where did the virus come from? Of the various Balinese I know who've had dengue, I'm not sure that they bit each other in their love-making. Perhaps.

The idea of Bali as a paradise island can be traced back to Westerners, (artists mainly) in the 1930s and grew from there. And grew faster when travel agents jumped on the wagon (ship?). People like the Indian PM Nehru called it ‘The Morning of the Earth’. Hollywood made some stupid movies which fed people’s imaginations. The ‘real’ Bali was portrayed as a fabulous tropical island full of bare-breasted maidens everywhere. More recently, Adrian Vickers, (currently a professor of SE Asian studies at the University of Sydney), wrote a book called Bali: A Paradise Created (1989), which goes into much more scholarly detail on this subject. Just returned 12th stay in bali always 30 days...it aint no paradise thats for sure...rubbish everywhere..you need to be so careful..every step you take is fraught with danger...i am retired and planned to go live in "Paradise".. But last 2 trips have changed my mind i think.. Seems to be more crooked money changers there than ever...many more savage dogs..i like to walk ..but every gang i go down ...i literally get surrounded by savage snarling barking dogs...unnerving to say the least..knocked on gate of a homestay and was greeted by 5 or 6 snapping barking dogs..not a place you would want to stay..then stayed near ubud few days..then in gianyar. Mozzies galore..big black and white striped buggars..hardys repellant seemed to work.. Bali belly first time after babi guling in a locals large warung...put me in bed 3 days ..flu like symptoms and diarrhoea 2 weeks..doc gave me tabs but nothing seemed to work..

bali is definitely not paradise..it to me is Paradise Lost...rubbish.savage territorial dogs..crooked money changers..aggressive local scooter riders anti Bule sentiment by many.. New Caledonia Is Paradise..beautiful friendly locals..great roads..fantastic bus system..clean as a whistle..

Paradise is a religious concept, so not my cup of tea. But as Aussies suffer hot days and shut themselves into air-con room praying that he electric supply does not overload and fail, and some of our North American friends cope with real sub-zeroes - we coast along at 25-30 all the time. On Thursday (quiet day) it rained alot and at times was breezy and I felt a bit cold = checked the thermometer and it was down to 23 (shock, horror).

You must be in the mountains..for those temps..last trip i stayed in kenderan for a week and survived ..no air con..no fans

You can always tell the tourists that have stayed in Ubud - most have bandaged legs from falling into the numerous holes in the "sidewalks" and huge swollen, weeping mozzy bites on exposed areas. I used to get them too but since have learned to slather anti-mozzie goo when there and not stay till sundown. Oh and stay on the scooter.

I'd turn it around and say the measure of "paradise" is the country or land with the LEAST number of things you'd change if you could and so far Bali fits that bill for me - but I haven't seen all the world has to offer yet :)
