Hi everyone Just wondering my Balinese partner had a scooter accident a year or so ago, with a heavy bump to the head and ever since she suffers bad headaches. I know if I'm to go in hospital here I select BIMC using my travel insurance, but unfortunately her family hasn't paid the insurance bill she has with the govt insurance so can't use. I can find a price of 3 million for a CT scan for her, does anyone know where I can perhaps find cheaper? I am in Denpasar but we can travel all Indonesia over if need be. Or is this one of those "must travel to Singapore or Thailand" matters? Thank you

Thanks for that JohnnyCool we will give them a call soon (the hospital) I'm really not confident in The Dukun suggestion but the hospital is a great resource one I might even use myself at some point

Sorry to ask but seriously: what kind of EXPAT on Bali has no insurance & no KITAS? It's not that expensive to get at least a basic coverage. Do they really think they are immortal? Same with tourists: why they don't pay 20 Dollars for a foreign health insurance, then - if sth happens and they can't pay the bill - start a donations campaign? I really don't get it...

The new hospital on the By Pass Road, Sanur, [I]might[/I] be worth checking out. It supposedly charges [I]anybody[/I] “local prices”. An expat friend of mine collapsed with heat stress recently, (he was basically dehydrated). I took him there and he was treated [I]very[/I] well. Put on drips, etc, prescribed and given various medications (“normal”), and the total bill was extremely reasonable (IMHO). I mean, “local prices”. I forget exactly now, but the whole lot of treatment was less than Rp 1 Juta ($100). He had [B]no[/B] insurance, [B]no[/B] KITAS, nothing like that. And he’s still alive. Worth checking out. Maybe you should ring them first, or find their website. [B]Bali Mandara Public Hospital[/B] Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai No.548, Sanur Kauh, Denpasar Sel., Kota Denpasar, Bali (0361) 4490566 A “cheaper alternative” [I]might[/I] be to go to a local Balinese medicine man (like a “dukun”). I guess plenty pensioners like me ? Try get a quote for a medical insurance when over 65 ....... A certain amount provisionned in the bank as "emergency fund" is my way of doing. Tourist is another matter, travel insurance is cheap. But again, it wont cover for crashing a bike when DUI .....

Personal choice, but as she may also need an MRI and in any case would require a skilled radiologist and neurologist to interpret the images and make a diagnosis, I would highly suggest a short trip to Singapore. Neurological issues can be complex and this is probably the last thing that I would trust to the local system.

Well if you carefully read the thread, it’s not me the ex pat with no insurance it’s my Indonesian partner. What you need to remember their family has a large UNPAID debt with the government insurance so to be able to use it again must pay the whole family’s debt first and I’m sure I don’t need to remind you the size of Indonesian families which in turn should give you some idea of the significance of the debt. As for travel insurance I have it but it's only practical to the amount of cash I have, eg I went to BIMC for something minor they need cash payment which I can later claim when I'm come. so this is still restricted by how much cash on hand I have.

The answer is simple - older expats are unable to get insurance cover. Just think - insurance companies require a profit. On average, medical expenses get higher as we get older. So, just live with it. :-)

So it wasn't a CT scan needed in the end it was just medication, less time on cell phone and posture issues causing tension headaches. We discovered all this by 3-4 visits to [B]Bali Mandara Public Hospital[/B] Jl. By Pass Ngurah Rai No.548, Sanur Kauh, Denpasar Sel., Kota Denpasar, Bali (0361) 4490566 (thanks Johnny cool) Total cost around 1 million for all 4 visits and medications (she is Balinese) My only complaint would be they seemed to be very excessive on the prescription medicine, but other than that well handled the issues are now pretty much resolved and within a reasonable price range. If you have no insurance this is a clean and modern facility, would recommend.

Those can give anybody headaches. I really hope that that hospital hasn’t ‘missed’ something. One never knows 100%, like just about any where in the world. Hospital doctors serving up bunches of medication is common here. Happens all the time. Virtually all doctors for that matter. Again, I hope the medications do ‘the trick’.

I have KITAP and no insurance - I was to slow to get BPJS - at 76 there is no insurer offering, so you pick up your own costs. :cool:

Correct me if im wrong ,but bpjs is only available to mixed married ,not retirement visa .
