It seems like my wife's friend might have been victim to a land buying scam.My wife's friend wanted to wanted to sell their land. They found a makalar who said he worked for a rich person in Jakarta. There was a lot of negotiating that went down and they finally agreed on the price. The buyer requested the Balinese owner to go to Jakarta where they would be paid a deposit for the land. The buyer said they had had trouble before so wanted to meet the owner in person. The owner of the land didn't have enough money to pay for a plane ticket to Jakarta. The land owner is short of money leading up to Nyepi, but they were able to raise 2 million rupiah to give to the makalar who kindly offered to pay for the ticket. My wife's friend who was going to get a commission was obviously pretty excited. Of course the makalar is now not answering their phone and is seems like they fell for a scam...

Maybe it's just been a long day for me spicy but I am confused - who has scammed whom? Your wife's friend was an agent for someone who wanted to sell their land and she didn't get a commission because the deal was not serious? Or did she do a completely dumb ass thing and pay 2jt to the intermediary for the buyer who was supposed to purchase a ticket for the seller to go to Jakarta? Or something else?

Your wife being a notaris or lawyer would of course realize that the deal could only be consummated by a notaris in the regency where the land is located. So how can a deal be legally binding even with just a deposit in Jakarta?

Or did she do a completely dumb ass thing and pay 2jt to the intermediary for the buyer who was supposed to purchase a ticket for the seller to go to Jakarta
Yes, that is basically what I was trying to say. I guess it is a variation of the Nigerian scam. the deal could only be consummated by a notaris in the regency where the land is located
The plan was or still is for the seller to go to Jakarta with the makalar to meet the buyer in person, then when the buyer is satisfied everything looks fine, they would return to Singaraja and pay the deposit in the notary's office. The owner paid the makalar 2jt yesterday morning. Yes without getting any kind of receipt of payment. I thought it strange because the ticket is not going to cost exactly 2jt, but the makalar had explained that he had put together a deal before and the seller cancelled on the deal after he bought the plane tickets, so the 2jt was like a security deposit. The makalar went back to the owner's house last night to get a copy of their ID card to buy the tickets, which made everyone involved think maybe this is not a scam. Because why would he go back to meet the owner if he already got his money. The makalar and land owner are supposed to be leaving for JKT on Sunday...

Ok, I understand now. Hope it works out for your wife's friend.

So it is not a land buying scam at all. It was just a simple con trick to get 2 juta. That is only 6 crates of beer. I really must live in a different world to many other people. Three members of this particular forum individually owe me more than that. None of them have gone through an elaborate scam, they have simply asked to "borrow" the money and "forgot" to pay it back.

To keep the record straight it should be noted that Davita has never met no.idea...has never borrowed 6 crates of beer from him nor value thereof...never forgotten to return anything borrowed and....even at his age...has a superior memory. Now where did I put that glass of wine:lemo::icon_question:

Today being Nyepi, with nothing much to do apart from personal reflection on the meaning of life and a quick audit of any major transgressions so far, I just added some extra ones. I shouldn't be using electricity, lights, computers, drinking beer and whiskey, cooking, lighting fires, playing music, etc. Shouldn't react to my wife walking around naked. And so far today, it seems that no.idea, Rangi and davita are also breaking the "rules" for this Balinese New Year. (I don't know the state of dress of their spices.) Sing-ken-ken and welcome to "1937".I thought that this "Land buying scam" thread might be of some educational value so decided to have a quick look. The way I read it, spicy chicken's wife's friend wants to sell some of her land to an unknown figure in Jakarta, via a "negotiator" based in Bali. The buyer requested the Balinese owner to go to Jakarta where they would be paid a deposit for the land. The buyer said they had had trouble before so wanted to meet the owner in person.
Now for the life of me, I can't see the point of this at all. Couldn't they arrange a Skype video call, or something like that? Is the "buyer" trying to buy land sight-unseen? Sounds stupid to me but what would I know?IF it is a "scam", it seems like a pretty clumsy one to me.Sorry - have to go and empty my freezer because everything's defrosted after turning off the refrigerator, just like everybody else has, too, right? And then I'll have to find a silencer for my air-pistol to shoot at some feral cats that are fighting on our garden wall, again (and disturbing the peace of Bali's Day of Silence).:icon_cool:

Quote from Johnny Cool...."and welcome to "1937".Omg...according to the Balinese calendar it's my birthday....hooray!You're all wlecome to my party...there's beer, wine and vodka...some rap, karaoke, dancing and strippers...male and female.But...because we all know what today is......the party's tomorrow..:icon_e_biggrin:

Will the air pistol kill cats?
I'm not trying to kill the cats - just send them a strong message to stop coming into our place, or else. I keep telling myself that I need to buy a more powerful deterrent (like an AK47-ish air rifle). Not sure where to buy one, but some kids down our lane have a good one they sometimes come into our garden with to shoot fruit bats. Now - there's an idea. Maybe I could offer them a bounty on the cats. But then the cat owners could find out and I'd be either branded as a cat hater, blackmailed by the kids, or both.Next week to Denpasar for a BB gun...Couldn't find the freezer because it became too dark to see.

I wish my scam lesson was as cheap as 2 juta.

Well he also ripped off another guy for 5 million. I know it is not a lot of money to us, but these people aren't rich and only got the money together by borrowing from other people. They don't do anything about it either, so the guy is still in the clear.
