The US Geological Survey said the shallow quake hit northern Lombok just 10 kms underground and was followed by two further secondary quakes and nearly two dozen aftershocks. The death toll is now at least 96 and 210+ severely injured. Sadly, these numbers will grow. Some people on Lombok haven't been found yet. Some 1,000 people have been evacuated from the Gili islands. Scores of foreign tourists are lining up in Lombok airport to get flights back to their home countries. Indonesia is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, and landslides virtually daily, somewhere or other. Despite this tragedy, Lombok will eventually recover. Bali, too. We're still waiting for what Mt Agung's going to do.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck off the north coast of Indonesia's island of Lombok on Sunday (Aug 5). It prompted a tsunami warning, but this was later lifted. The quake occurred at a depth of 15 km, the Indonesian Meteorological Agency said. Officials have urged people to move away from the ocean. "Please go to a place with higher ground, while remaining calm and not panicking," Dwikorita Karnawati, head of the agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics, told local TV. There were no immediate reports of casualties, said Reuters.
