Monthly salary for pembantu

can anyone give me some thoughts on monthly salary for pembantu. Our pembantu lives with us is very nice space.. equivalent to the remainder of our house. Fully self contained ..eats same as us, has no outgoing costs at all apart from personal needs. Works 6 days per week. Each year return ticket to Sumba for 2 weeks. Bonus Xmas and Easter. Uniform provided. And she is like one of family!

Should have also included that she works for us from about 7am - 1.30pm....then rest time until 5pm....then has dinner finished and ready to end her day at about 8pm. Only looking after two of us for most of the time. If we have guests, I usually get an extra day helper to assist with some duties. However, we insist that when guests stay with us for FREE, they must give some gratuity to all our staff when they leave, so they pick up and extra 200,000 or 300,000 at a time generally.

Minimum wage for Bali is about 2.2million. For a 57 hour week, I wouldn't pay less than 3million. That is still less than $US1 per hour. You should read Alice Childress "Like one of the family" before using that particular idiom. You might think twice about using it next time. Regards

Assuming your pembantu stays with you, how much is the room and board worth, and do you include that in the monthly salary amount?

Well YES thats the question.....she lives with us (has for 5+ years)...so if she were to live outside the house, she would need to pay maybe minimum 600,000 rps per month for very small kos, then need furniture, tv,linen, kitchen utensils, laundry costs, electricity and transport. ...and all food and drinks etc !!! And it would be very basic housing. I am thinking easily more than 1juta per month. We also include things like visit to doctor, doctor gigi...and in bonuses from us and our friends that stay each year, Im thinking she maybe gets another 3 Juta per annum...somethimes a little more if we've had lots of visitors. So the question is: If an employee gets all of the above included in their salary, what should a fair salary be? Thanks Mark!

How can you suggest that tips from your guests and bonuses from you should be considered in calculating her salary? How would you like it if your boss said to you "Your salary is $50,000 but because we pay you a bonus of $5,000 we are reducing it to $45,000"? Same for tips, nothing to do with what is a fair salary. Ask your maid what she thinks is a fair salary, then pay her a little bit more.

You are looking for a straight forward answer for a situation that obviously has different variants. That being said, I pay 2.3 juta a month with a 100k rp. per month annual raise for a non-live-in pembantu that works 36 hours per week in Jembrana Regency. The reason the location is noted is that it is probably a higher wage for this area.

I`m a little confused about this question,at first i thought ok just some new people trying to get an idea of what to pay and do the right thing,but now you say she has been working for you for 5+ years, why after all that time are you asking what is a fair rate of pay,has some type of problem developed between you guys and the maid ???,i don`t know it just seems a little strange to me,

Laralea the legal standard in Indonesia is a 7 hour day if you are working them 6 days. Only for a 5 day week should you expect 8 hours per day. Of course you'll probably get some other expats telling you "oh don't worry about that - it only applies to businesses not to individuals". All I can say about that is how would you feel if a friend or relative of yours was being employed under those terms. If you would like to research your responsibilities further (I'm referring here to the legal, not the moral questions), you can google working hours (waktu kerja) under Law No. 3 of 2003 concerning Labor Affairs.
