A good idea when you are storing flour in a container is to add a couple of bay leaves to keep the weevils out. They hate even the faintest smell of it and will not invade your flour or any other dry stuff. The only problem is where to buy bay leaves in Bali. I am sure someone can tell us. Even better to find a bay tree growing here. Can anyone tell me how to keep ants (samut) out of the sugar container. Balinese people have a habit of leaving tops off jars and the sugar is the first thing that the ants will invade by the million if they can....please advise if you have a solution.....G....

Gloria,
My in laws leave the Sugar in the sun, as the ants don't like the direct sunlight.... Or so they say???? But I must admit no ants & the jar is open... I wonder if it is because the dogs walk past & get all the ants as they take a big lick out of it!??? I think I will have no sugar from now on...
But seriously that's their theory, in Ubud I used to put it on top of a tin the ants could not climb the tin to get into the suagr container???
The problem is if they don't put a lid on they won't put it back in the right spot either!???
I guess you need to explain the reason to them. I know I gave a friend a big tin of Chupa Chups ( I work at C'burys!) a week later I went to vist & the tin was full of ANTS! They had got into the Chupa Cup sticks & were eating the inside of the lollypops! So all 150 of them in the bin, as ants are not a pleasant taste!
Good Luck, that sure is a mission!!!!

We learnt to keep our sugar in the fridge. But I suppose if you don't have one it's a bit hard. It's so annoying that they even get in the jar with the lid on tight the little buggars. My hate is cockroaches and you see many in the kitchen all hours of the night.

Hi,
Indeed keeping sugar in the sun will have the ants disappear. Sometimes when they are sitting on top of a cake, put the cake in the sun and in no time they have gone.
