matsaleh wroteThere are so many buildings in the south and in Ubud now that the whole of the south is about 2 degrees celcius hotter (on average) than when you were last here, Tintin. Most of the rice paddies have gone, so there's no relief from the heat and humidity. This year, nearing the end of rainy season, has been particularly unbearable.
How sad! Well, you are there, and I have not returned to Bali since 2007, but, in retrospect, I can say that I felt it coming even though my time spent on the island had been only twenty + years. Two degrees C (average) is a huge change, and certainly a large (?) part is due to climate change, to wit the coral bleaching not only in the Indonesian waters, but throughout the world. However, the catastrophic disappearance of the paddies over the last 30 -40 years would certainly not only account for this local increase in average temperatures, but also the erosion of the Balinese culture, as predicted by expert sociologists over the same time period.
