Spicy sorry but your link above doesn't work...I get a 404 error code and page not available. I did read the article and the change of heart is 'half-hearted' from what I read. The Minister (Luhut) only said the airport would be built after the road connecting North to the South was completed.

Taking a long realistic look at this idea has appeal. It certainly has for myself because driving the present slow dangerous two lane road connecting Denpasar to Gilimanuk every 10 days to my domicile in Jembrana for provisions is in itself a great motivator for change. It is wonderful bait for those land speculators in the north who would vastly profit for the opportunity. What is challenging is do the Balinese really want easier access from Jawa to Bali? Think about it.

I don't see how the dream-toll from N to S Bali will ease access from Jawa to Bali in the near future. Surely that is proposed to be accomplished by the other mythical-toll from Kuta to Gilimanuk..... http://blog.skproperty.org/tag/bali-highway/.... I understand the view of the Balinese wishing to keep the radical elements out from java , unfortunately in many parts of java radicalism is on the rise , not a nice place these days , for sure I feel like an infidel over there . Ya it would be great to have a fast road to Gilimanuk , but I dont see it happening soon.

Sorry Davita! I think I may have punched "unlike" instead of reply. My point isn't about time for completion. The present road with all its shortcomings as the primary source of traffic to and from Jawa may not be undesirable to the Balinese. Remember that a bridge linking the 2 islands has been totally refused by the Balinese in the past.

Yep. But what is the proposed route? My understanding is that it’s to start in Soka and end near Seririt, which would be “easier” than drilling tunnels through the central mountains. To get to Soka you usually have to go through Denpasar, on to Tabanan and further to Soka. The NS toll road won’t help the North Bali Airport much (off and now on again), presuming either of them actually get built in our lifetimes. Assume both do get built eventually. Fly into the North, get off and then what? Want to go down South or even central Bali? Oh, you can go from the airport through Singaraja, Lovina and Seririt and then down to Soka, then Denpasar. Finally, you wind up somewhere near where you wanted to go (sort of). Now imagine what the traffic might look in and around Denpasar in the next 10-20 years. Compare it to what it is right now. :eek:

I checked and tried to make sense of the info in the link you quoted. It was a bit of a struggle for me. Blah-blah-blah stuff. Four toll roads. Cost maybe 35 trillion rupiah to achieve. And I wasn't even drunk when I read it. :rolleyes:

The toll road planners have been contemplating various possible routes. Some of the more tricky sections include Kuta-Canggu-Tanah Lot because of all the existing developments there, land acquisition hassles, etc. So I guess that the planners are scratching their heads, (and other body parts), to figure out which way to build. One of their main scenarios is: Kuta-Canggu-Tanah Lot-Soka (28 km) Soka-Pekutatan (25.1 km) Pekutatan-Lovina (46.7 km)¹ The total distance: Kuta-Lovina (99.8 km) Lovina-Kubutambahan is another 25 km² Total distance: Kuta-Kutambahan ([B]125 km[/B]), but I don’t think that this will be all toll road. For example, to get from Lovina to Kubutambahan, you have to go through Singaraja. More headaches for the planners. Add to all of that how to go back the other way. I, for one, wouldn’t want to end up back in Kuta, or Denpasar. Even now, it’s traffic mayhem there every day, including “good” days. The prospect of total gridlock is rapidly approaching. While a North-South toll road is certainly a great idea, I think the current “planning” is somewhat over-ambitious. Good, [B]if[/B] they can pull it off on-time and within budget.³ The idea of abandoning the North Bali Airport makes more sense to me, and getting on with providing better access to Bali from Banyuwangi. (Airport already there and will soon be fully international.) Improving the Gilimanuk-Denpasar road is a non-brainer. [I]Notes:[/I] ¹ Pekutatan is on the south coast. Wiped out 6 cars, several motorbikes, one dead, several in hospital and finally stopped at the entrance to GWK. Imagine if it went further and damaged the Buddha statue. They’d have to start all over again. The bus-driver ran away – not sure if they’ve found him yet.
