Odalan Ceremony....appropriate size donation by villa

It is difficult to know what is appropriate. There is no set fee for contributions to these types of things. Maybe ask a local friend for advice or arrange it yourself?

We have been asked by our new management company to contribute IDR 2 million as part of a 2-villa IDR 4 million contribution to the local temple site 12' x 16' feet dimensions, outside of our villa for the upcoming Odalan ceremony. Having researched this, I now understand the ceremony, but never having been asked in the previous 11 years of owning our villa, I wanted to ask for comments on what the community thinks is an appropriate amount of IDR for a ceremony based around food and flower offerings brought in on very ornamentally designed woven baskets for at most 3 days since this is not a roofed temple. Also our PT staff size is 4 and I don't know if the other 6 villas ( different mgmt. companies) in our complex will be participating. Thanks for any input.

Thanks for such a quick response. I have put feelers out to numerous friends and business contacts but so far nothing concrete in terms of costs. Living in Hong Kong, it is not possible for my wife and I to manage the ceremony which is why I have a professional management company managing the property. If I find out more info, I will gladly post so that others may have the benefit of hindsight if they are approached.

Difficult question. May I suggest something I believe I heard from the Marx Bothers. Get a bundle of IDR 50.000 bills, and meet with the village chief. Eventually, when the conversation finally gets to the local temple and your contribution, start flipping the bills one by one on the table in front of you, while watching carefully the face of the village chief. When you detect a faint smile on his face, take back the last bill: you just got the right amount!

My goodness Tintin you must have psychic powers of some kind. How you can be so well informed after only a 30 year hiatus from Bali is absolutely amazing!

More like 11 years ago, my last visit (and most likely my last) was in Nov 2007.
