Just had a sales guy from Telkom wifi id. Many of the big hotels are using it and it supposed to be faster than Speedy. Anyone have experience with this?
Markit
Recently started using Telekomsel 5Gb sim (IDR100k) which is as fast as I've had it here so far and better yet the connection is equally the best I've had - all them coconut trees don't seem to slow it down.

The speeds are supposed to be "up to" 10 MB using fibre optic. Free installation, but you have to commit to 3 years. Sunari Hotel are supposed to be using and I have read a comment on FB that their internet is very good. It would hopefully solve the problem we have with Speedy during the rainy season: https://balipod.com/forum/threads/problem-with-speedy-during-rainy-season.10632/

Does that mean you/I won't need a pre-existing land line first?
spicyayam
No. it doesn't use a telephone line. Our application has to get signed off in JKT first. I will post results once the installation is done.

Jeez, lawyer wife and good internet. Next thing you'll wanna have Vegemite deliveries to your door. Joking aside, please do keep us informed.

We got one step closer today when a guy came to our house to measure the distance from our house to the street. He said it would be another month before we get connected. Anyone else using this yet? It would be nice to hear someone else's experience.

Another step forward today. A guy came to install the access point. Now we just have to wait to get the fibre to our door.

The reason I ask is I just noticed there are new poles placed every 100metres or so down my street. They are the same type of poles as Telkom uses for telephone/cableTV/speedy but, so far, not connected to anything. Is it possible this may be for a fibre line?
spicyayam
I live in Lovina. They installed some cable along the main road some time ago now. We are about 100m from the main road so it will be interesting how the cable is going to reach us.
davita
Thanks spicy. I'm hoping the pole they installed opposite my house is for fibre as it will be simple to hook to my place. When I bought our house new the PLN pole was so far the cable blew in the wind so I paid for a new pole to be installed closer. Now two other new houses are connected to the pole I paid for and I didn't get any compensation....so, keep that in mind and good luck with your installation.

@davita you did get compensated ... they letting pay for Electric lolif pole on ur land disconnet others from your pole . now you can negoitate compensation !
davita
Brilliant idea smoke....sadly the pole is on public land but your idea of disconnecting the wires to co-erce compensation has merit. How familiar are you with 3 phase 240volt AC and can you help by bringing a tall ladder and some rubber gloves:icon_question:OH! btw....your new wife asked where do you keep your life insurance policy....:devilish:
spicyayam
Installation is free and so far we haven't had to pay a single rupiah. The access point they installed is some kind of Cisco router which probably is more expensive than your usual Tp-Link.
Smoke
davita ladder is not a problem ever. All I personally would do Is call one on my PLN friends to what I needed to be done .My new wife is not on my life insurance or Pensions or the SS benifits till I bring her to the USA . But she has a notorized document that she is sole aire to my listed RI bank accounts.Since your pole is not on your property , not a good idea to "play" with it . If it your pole on your property then yes

My modem-router died a while ago, (using Telkom Speedy ADSL). I replaced it with the same model and suddenly, my normal 3 Mbps dropped to 2Mbps. One "technician" told me it was impossible for me to get 3 Mbps. Oh yeah? So how come I'd been getting it for 18+ months and paying for it?Telkom sent their "boss" technician. He changed a setting in my modem-router but it still only worked as a 2 Mbps connection.I went to the Telkom office in Denpasar. They checked my account and I was getting and paying for a 3 Mbps Unlimited "service". They also confirmed that I seem to be a very big user of the service. (True - I download around 1-2 Terabytes of stuff a month, not counting Skype video calls, etc. They charge me Rp 1,100,000/month and I make sure I'm getting my money's worth). In the street where I live in Sanur, there is a Telkom depot about one minute away. A few months ago, I saw workers laying down cables. Not sure what they were, but I think they're fibre-optic cables.I asked the Telkom person if fibre-optic cable is in my street. He wasn't sure. "Have to do a survey". OK - Why not ring the depot in my street and get an instant answer? Nope. "Have to a survey".So - how long will it take to "do a survey"? Maybe one or two weeks.Let's do that."Survey" done. Which package did I want? Choices: 10, 20, 50, 100 Mbps, (including equipment, 100 TV channels, etc). I opted for 20 Mbps. Installation fee Rp 75,000.A salesperson turned up weeks later. I signed a bit of paper for the 20 Mbps package. The next morning, she phoned and told me that only the 10 Mbps package was currently available for my location. That's OK by me - three times faster than what I already have and less than half the price I'm paying (plus all the other bells and whistles). No "technicians" have surfaced to get me up and running. Rang the sales person back and asked her why? Oh - They were supposed to come. Yeah - right. And then the wonderful "soon".Lousy way to run a business, IMHO. And still waiting. The longer you live here, the more "patience" you have to embrace. No choice.I'm now getting paranoid about getting hit on the head with a naughty coconut. Thankfully, no durian trees here.:icon_e_biggrin:

All the cable was installed today, but now have to wait for them to turn on the service
Spicy...I'd appreciate some advice. I noticed, since yesterday, a cable has been strung between new poles that were installed down my street a few weeks ago. There is a pole directly opposite my house but the cable is just supported thru' a loop and continues down the street. Thru' my binoculars I can read it is fibre optic cable but cannot see how they will splice into the cable to distribute to anyone. My question is how did they manage that where you live...do they connect to some distribution box somewhere else or can they cut into a fibre optic cable and splice, like they do with copper. I would doubt the latter but appreciate your input.Thanks.

I missed it when they installed the cable in our street. It looks just like a very thick cable which they run on the telephone poles just below the telephone cable. Maybe later I can go out in the street and take a picture. They do run the cable right into your house, attach some kind router to your ceiling and then you get what looks like a bigger than usual modem.Since they did all of the installation they said they need to do some kind of final configuration, but haven't been back since my last post. They didn't give any passwords so can't try it yet. We just back home after a few days away so will follow up again.@JohnnyCool I would suggest just keep calling the sales person. In the end that seemed to help for us getting it installed as we said we just want to try it first before agreeing to any other of the services they were offering (telephone, tv channels etc)
