I know you said you'd rather avoid tourist areas, but I live in a one bedroom studio in Sanur right now. It's one of ten other rooms in a nice complex. Not necessarily a villa, but it does have a pool. There is no security but the building has CCTV and is in an extremely safe area of Sanur with many local families, away from the tourist strip. It's 3 million rupiah a month. If you're interested I can put you in touch with someone here.

Yes, it is a five-minute motorbike ride to the beach. 3 million rupiah is around 280 AUD. You do have to pay I bond. I think I paid 2 million rupiah for the bond but you could probably negotiate that down. You have to pay your own electricity/hot water but Wi-Fi is free (although it hasn't been that fast as of late). Each room also has a private small kitchen. Mine came with a gas burner but I'm not sure all of them do.

I'll answer your first question by asking another one: What on earth is "Australian Food"? You mean meat pies and pizzas that taste like cardboard with tomato sauce on top? One of the pleasures of moving to another country is being able to experience a new cuisine, experiment with your tastes and assimilate into the gastronomic culture. For heaven's sake, Bali is full of culinary delights at a fraction of the cost of what you would have to pay in Australia. Seriously, if Australian food is your number one concern when retired in Bali then I would suggest you reconsider your decision. Eat local, it's healthier for your body as well as your wallet. Hi Fortunny and welcome to the forum. To retire in Indonesia the first essential is 'Do you qualify for a visa' The next is how do you intend to domicile...renting, leasing or buying a home as there are so many choices and budgets. I cannot answer all your questions and hope others will chime in..... 1. There are supermarkets all over Bali selling all sorts of foreign produce but importing causes some to be expensive....like cheese! We visited Adelaide a couple of months back and my wife filled her case with Ozzie cheese from the central market. 2. Again...Bali is hardly a jungle city, nor like Alice Springs, as there are numerous international beauty products. I'm not familiar but if you identify what is your preference I'm sure some member will have info. 3. The quality of medical care in Bali in the International accredited hospitals is very good but probably not up to Australian standards. Prescription medication, or a generic, is also readily available but if you specify what you need we can find out for you. Best to bring what you need and ensure you also bring your prescription and make sure your med is not a drug banned in RI. 4. There are many health Insurance brokers (Google) that can find quotes to cover your specific insurance needs. You likely will need to cover repatriation back to Oz if very sick.

If i am going to eat vegimite on toast or have the money to able to afford a quality Aussie rib eye steak or a slice of pavlova (maybe that originates from NZ ) . I will have to wash it down with an Barossa shiraz or a cold climate pinot noir from Vic for which i may be able to find a $12aud for @ $40-70 aud in Bali :(

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not sure what you’re on about with your comment. Can’t afford Vegemite (which you can’t spell – did you mean Vaginamite?) Can’t afford Ozzie rib eye steaks? “Pavlova” costs too much, wherever you are? But, you can still fork out up to $70 for a bottle of Ozzie wine? Even a $6 bottle of Jacob’s Creek in Oz (years ago), can set you back $35+ in Bali these days. Don’t even contemplate a bottle of Grange Hermitage (if you could find one). Unless your pockets are loaded, you could “slum” it with Two Islands, Plaga, Hatten’s, etc. I just walked back home from a tiny bar near where I live. Had a small glass of “white wine”, ([I]might[/I] have been local “Chardonnay”). Only cost $6.50. (That was after I’d had some Jim Bean, a Bintang or two and maybe a JW Red Label “chaser”. I forget. Oops – I had the white [I]after[/I] those. :confused:
