The good old days

I agree Fred2.... Nowhere is as good as it was in the good ole days. I lived in Penang in the mid 1950's and thought what a place to retire...so I took up their generous MM2H visa when I lived in Canada with a view to having a holiday home. My surprise was when I arrived in Penang, after many years, and finding it no longer the 'Pearl of the Orient' that I had imagined. The smell of frangipani that I recalled was interspersed with the stink of industry and crazy kids on motorbikes doing wheelies and racing to Tanjong Bungah. We all get older and those dreams/fantasies diminish.

I look at MMH2 it has fantastic benefits 10 year visa, deen to the MotoGP and F1. Went to a great wedding at the top of there telecom tower beautiful view of the city, I think it's the next step up from Indonesia. but my retirement will be in Indonesia, you just need to go with the slow pace and I need to convince my boss that I'm too old to work.

First trip to Bali was Darwin/Jakarta/Bali/Singapore/Darwin no direct flight. I think Qantas was the only way to get there from Darwin and Bali only had a tin shed. We had to go to the consulate for a visa, 2 weeks wait. Can't remember the exchange around 3,000 to the dollar? Room rate 50c a night, motor bikes were blue tank Yamaha or open air ute with cover. Over the years have flown Ansett, air paradise, Jetstar, Royal Brunei, Garuda, virgin, Bad luck must follow me I was in Bali when Ansett went bust, Bali bombing, world trade centre and ash cloud but that may be considered good luck.As David said on another Forum there are too many Aussie in Bali so now I stay in Surabaya, some time I drive to Bali or do over night stays to and from Surabaya. Bali was great in the old days but now you can go to beaches in Malang or Madura no people, clean beaches just like the old days.

If Bali is infested with tourists and has lost it's magic, is Sumba a better option to retirement? Rent a nice beach front property, build a villa and enjoy. :)

I am planning a quick trip there. It's a 50 min flight. I have no idea what to expect so this is why i asked about it here as you 2 seem to have some serious experience regarding Bali and indonesia

That's the reason I asked you to elaborate ...to find your interest. Maybe those who have visited can answer your question....I've never been there.
