Hi i am australian and plan to come to bali again in february 2018,,,still deciding if/how to retire there,,this is my 11 th visit usually a month at a time ,,but this time want 2 months ,always practice Bahasa bali when I,m there and have made many Balinese friends ,have a family I have known for 25 years ,watched their babies grow up,,,,give me time to find out all i need to retire there. I know I can apply in melbourne thru the embassy,,however i have heard i can get the 30 day extension ,,thru immigrasi office in Bali,,have seen one just off bypass in kuta ,,,has any one done this or know if this is advisable and /or feasible ,,,I always stay in Sanur ,,,and just scooter around all over. thanks Dave

There are two types of Visa on Arrival (VOA). One is free but only for 30 days and not extendable. The other you need to pay (US$35 or equivalent) at the airport on arrival. It lasts 30 days but can be extended easily in that Immigration office you noted for another 30 days (another US$$35 or equivalent). Just remember...In Indonesia they count the day you arrive as day one....Please check the VOA departure date....an overstay can be costly.

I wouldn't bother with a VOA. Much easier to get an 'ordinary' Tourist Visa (60 days, up front) from your nearest Indonesian consulate/embassy. Extending the paid-for VOA can be a bit of a pain... (a time-consuming hassle; getting to the usually overcrowded office, waiting for your number to come up, sometimes for hours, and so on). I did one several years ago and spent more than four boring hours there! Never again.

You should note that, according to law, the 60 day tourist visa issued in an overseas embassy/consul without the need for a sponsor is not extendable. However, I've heard that in Bali, if an extension to that 60 days is applied for, coupled with a letter from a sponsor, it can be extended monthly up to six months, similar to a Sosbud, as they are both Visa # B311. I have not heard of Jakarta, or any other RI Immigration Office, granting this extension. This could be useful to know just in case an extension to the 60 days is desired.
