Too many pies...No.idea tells me the Oysters are beautiful here in Bali so off I wentto the Jimbaran seafood market. The one stall that has Oysters kept them in a tank with circulating seawaterat 50,000rp per kilo (but I usually get the tourist price for some reason) Picked out a few closed Oysters from the tank as advised by No.idea(some were open) and half a kilo of prawns and got the hell outa dodge...Oysters were superb cracked, down the hatch, suck on a lime and a suck on a BintangVery similar to Sydney Rock's just a bit smaller in size.Prawns on the other hand were very bland...but maybe it is my cooking.Red Snapper is the pick of the fish, Tuna is ordinary for me...Bali seafood is a bit hit and miss, what are your picks for the best and worst eating?

Red Snapper is my choice of fish here.Perfect over the grill .

Best fish in our part of East Bali in no particular order:BaracudaWhite SnapperBlack Snapper (best, but seldom)Big Eyed Red FishMahi-mahiThese are, of course, the Balinese names but pretty descriptive. Red Snapper all go to restos and warung but who cares - shrimp are awful here, bland, tasteless and mushy. I think they are all farmed or the wild stock has been corrupted by the farmed shrimp.

My pal went fishing off Sanur recently with his relatives from Canada. They caught a fish with a big spear nose, which they released, and some, what I was told, were amberjacks. The Canadian visitors were delighted as they normally only catch salmon in Canada.Generously, they gave some to my wife who is now perplexed...she asked..."How to cook lumberjacks?":black_eyed:

Only salmon....how sad for them.....wish i could find a good supplier of salmon for same price we used to get at home......got some from raja for around 290 and was ok, but not great for that price.

Thanks guys. Anyone tried the crabs, lobsters etc
Markit
Crabs - no good, Lobster, spiny and tasteless. I've got these freshwater things call Yabbies or Dabbies (Sprechen Sie Oz?) which are these huge freshwater crawdads and they are like the fecking Loch Ness Monster. With a decent garlic sauce you will forget all Lobster.
ertert
That is disappointing to hear...I did see some Yabbies at the markets I will take more pics next trip.Thanks.

Most crabs are too small. However the mud crabs that were farmed in Ujung Pandang were quite good.Generally lobsters here have big head and only a small tail so you are paying a lot of money to feed the dog.Markit if you are serious about the yabbies, I have a market for them. Now a serious question. What does a Big Eyed Red Fish look like?Sometimes there are also Morton Bay Bugs (slipper lobster) available at the Jimbaran markets.
samsiam
Yabbies...crikey....might have to kiss and make up with the old bastard.....marron or redclaw would do also......or better than any lobster ever.....morton bay bugs
Markit
These are red claw I think, least wise they have 2 big red claws. Not hurt by the "bastard" but the "old" sent you to the bottom of the list.

.might have to kiss and make up with the old bastard....
Please none of that on here. The correct expression is Obnoxious Old Bastard.

That's only the middle shelf. There are plenty more on the other shelves - and a backup case on the floor. Got to look after stuff, you know.

I'm in training at the moment.Working myself up to that Zen like peak of performance required for some truly gifted Chili cooking this weekend in Ubud:https://balipod.com/forum/threads/if-chili-be-the-food-of-love-fart-on.10512/

What a pity. I will be back in Oz by 19th October. I would have loved to haved taught you a lesson about chilli cuisine. Yanks know nothing about hot food, as you probably know. If you are in Sanur in the next couple of days, let me know. Love to buy you a beer. Sam.
