This forum being a collection of know-it-all old farts I thought this might be of interest as I, along with several other know-it-all old farts, will be competing (and hopefully conquering) in the Chili Cooking contest next week at The Melting Pot Saloon in Ubud - just off where Hanuman carries on straight after the dive down Monkey Forest Road. Email Greg Berlin (berlininbaliAThotmail.com) for further infosAnyone can join in and it's really highly competitive NOT. More of an excuse for some light-hearted piss taking and serious drinking. Number one, because they are a good way for everybody to get together for a little friendly competition and a charitable way to find the chili of the day. For over forty-five years, chili cookoffs have served as a way to have fun, promote chili, and help others. Millions of dollars in proceeds from chili cookoffs have been donated to charitable organizations and used to support charitable causes. Many charities benefit from these celebrations of chili. As cookoffs transformed from tomfoolery to semi-serious competition, an organization known as CASI (an acronym derived from Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc.) evolved. CASI developed formal rules and guidelines to encourage fair and impartial judging of chili and showmanship competitions and will be used for this year's events. For more information on CASI, check out www.chili.org. After the success of last year's events at the Melting Pot Saloon in Ubud, the tradition of Bali's (indeed, Indonesia's) only Chili Cookoff will continue. We appreciate your interest in becoming a competitor and look forward to an exciting day of fun and games this year. The Melting Pot Saloon holds this annual event to raise awareness of the joys of a steaming bowl of Texas chili and money for local charities. As these are our biggest fundraisers each year, we need your support. Please cook as much chili as is necessary for the official judging and the People's Choice Award crowd. We ask that you prepare a minimum of 4 liters of chili to please both the judges and the crowds. Help us raise the money for these charities and organizations and have a good time doing it, too! Given a little more preparation time this year, we've developed more structure in the planning and, by popular demand, we will hold two qualifying trials leading up to the main event in October. These will enable competitors to hone their skills while vying for a chance to receive the honor of recognition as Best Chili in Bali 2014. Mark your calendars with these dates for 2014:4[SUP]th [/SUP] Annual Texas Chili Cookoff 19 October Please note there is a cap of 15 contestants for the annual event in October. To register your interest in competing, either as an individual or as a team, fill in the registration form and submit it, along with the Entry Fee, to the Melting Pot Saloon no later than 3 days before the event. Well last year it started around 10ish but the chili was ready at different times up to about lunch time. Most people just come and chat about chili or Bali and try what's available, leer at the girls passing (believe it or not there were some chili groupies there last year), drink beer, chat, drink beer, ad infinitum or until the chili's done or gone - then the vote is held and everyone has a drink.

All you boring old farts that never go anywhere or do anything here will be completely ambivalent to know that it's CHILI COOKING TIME AGAINSunday the 15th of February - for further information see above.I will of course be there to defend the title I almost got in October, eat loads of bad chili and drink copious amounts of beer.
