Is it just me? When I go into a larger shop here in Bali - Hardys, Mitral 11, Lotti, Ace, Galleria there are generally more employees standing around, sometimes in the dozens, than there are customers. Now these poor people have absolutely nothing to do from clock punch in to clock punch out but look busy and ready to help. If you talk to them they will generally act like they just woke up to the fact that they are employed in a shop to sell stuff and are completely baffled by this daunting turn of events. Now if, as I often do out of pity, you ask one of these lost souls IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE where something in the shop is or if they happen to have something - THEY NEVER KNOW ANYTHING. After waiting for Wayan to ask Made, who then asks Kadek, Komang then calls the local genius who then personally comes out of his office on Olympus and demands to speak to Wayan (2). Now we usually have a small crowd assembled by this time to find my widget and we then all troop down to the chosen shelf space where the inevitable and saddening "Habis" happens. This always surprises me and I'm not sure why, but not as much as the fact that these animated(slightly) corpses have a manager who works there too and it must be clear to him that these walking dead are completely useless without training and they have so much time to train the deceased - WHY DON'T THEY DO IT???Amazon Indonesia where are you???

I could answer this....but feel under appreciated around here and would not want to annoy you. There is a very simple reason for it....see if you can work it out big guy.

It's the kind of thing that bothered me more when I first came here. I guess I have just gotten used to it the longer I have lived here. Smaller shops and markets can be good, if you can find what you want.

I hear ya, Markit, but you forgot to mention the game of Chinese Whispers they'll play between you telling them what you want and you getting your answer.

Got to say I still get a chuckle when i see 3 workers stocking the same shelf from the same box, moving out of the way for each other to place on shelf while blocking the small path for customers to use. Most items can be gotten at local shops that includes plumbing and electrial and all tools
Normy
I am certain the job for many of these people is to unload items from shelves and relocate them in other parts of store so next time you visit nothing can be found. Another important role is aisle blocking. This is achieved by putting your arms around 2 or more friends and giggling. I like the guy who sits on floor, takes everything from shelf (packaged and tinned goods), dusts one by one with feather duster and then replaces on shelf. Makes you really appreciate a few bintangs after the shopping expedition.
Markit
Normy, trick is to have the Binnys before you go shopping.
Normy
Yeah good thinking, but then might not make the short distance from bali pub to hardys.

Another 2 things which annoy me a lot when I go into one of these stores:1) Being followed around by staff every step I take. Off to the suits: 20% diskon pak, yeah I know that's what the sign says... next to the shirts: 40% diskon pak... yeah yeah thanks obviously this same person keeps following me around wherever I move. I know they got nothing to do, but damn it's hard to miss those huge signs and still they find the need to repeat whatever that sign says.2) Whenever I'm in an argument/discussion (with my Balinese wife being there as well) and I ask my questions (or vent my annoyance) in English, the staff always starts talking back to my wife in Indonesian. Not just plain brainless floorstaff, managers as well! What's up with that??

It's just that the cost of labour here is low - consequently, managers believe that the more sales people ( AKA gormless twits) you have, then the more sales you will make. One of this countries biggest problems is underemployment ( hiring 3 people to do one persons job) and don't forget, the customer always comes last! That being said, there are some small places on Gatsu ( mainly hardware, electrical and automotive ) that have few staff, no computers and they know where everything is, and if they don't have it, they will get it for you in a couple of days. The size of the establishment always seems to be in inverse proportion to the quality of the service![/QUOTE]Couldn't agree more...and Galleria ACE hardware is a joke. I entered and the doorman puts his hand on his heart and says 'welcome'..... I asked...where can I find doors? He said "Pak...you just came thru the door!"Lucky I didn't ask where they kept toilets...he would have sent me back into the mall!:hopelessness:
Braveheart_shaped_box
I love the shelf stacking by association, baby food next to the detergents, bottled sauces next to the toilet rolls, Listerine next to the Bintang.

Once they've found a really good place for something and you've learned where it is.... they either run out or move it again. Can't think of how many times I've gone in to buy something that I've had a dozen times only find out it's out (for the 3rd time in a row) and nobody knows if it will ever come back or when. We aren't talking exotic specialties but just daily shet like milk or bread crumbs. It keeps life interesting and you always get to find new shops.

Funny how experiences differ on...well, experiences.Based on past experiences...which some here find hard to fathom...Ace hardware is actually really good, staff helpful and not clingy.ymmv...dependant on experience....interesting hey morkit.

Samsiam which Ace do you visit and get helpful staff. I have been 5 different Ace stores and each is the same clueless staff .Also each store varies on price for exact same item

The galleria one and the one in sunset rd above burger king.....not sure that kerobokan or semenyak........all things relative, but was a 'pleasant' experience as compared to back home.as an example....went in, looked about, nobody following me about which gives me the creeps.....i asked where something was, he took me straight there....i checked them out and then had questions....he answered and demonstrated.....then pleasantly took the item to the cashier waiting for me to checkout so i did not have to carry it about....in fact writing this and recalling it.....it was exeplary service when compared to the ****s back home......tis all relative as i say.........and i have more examples just today elsewhere.you lot are spoilt here.
