Volcano preparation tips

So other than buying masks what is everyone else doing to prepare for the volcano? We have a water tank that has a roof, but is open at the top, so will have to cover that. Anything else people are doing to protect their place from volcanic ash?

My wife and I were thinking the same thoughts and have bought cheap tarps to cover our pool. Our handyman will enclose our rooftop A/C compressors intake with a plastic mesh extra filter...the top is already covered to create a sunshade. We plan to stay indoors with all doors and windows closed tight and A/Cs ON. Other than that I cannot think of anything...we are close to all shops so don't visualize stocking anything out of the ordinary as we always have extra water and LPG bottles. I thought of a small genset, if the power goes out for any length of time, but if the situation got that serious I'll be looking to get out of Bali.

Ya I agree , if it gets serious I plan to move to java temporarily , but out of the way of the ash cloud which generally follows the prevailing winds ie surabaya direction.

Bloody thieves got caught in Bebandem, feeding dogs of a deserted house and then tried to break and enter! President Jokowi also mentioned such bestards at his visit in Singaraja. There is no sigh of an immerdiate explosion so far. Check the volcanic app.

I'm in Ubud with a large majority of my room being open to the elements. The general consensus around here is that we have nothing to worry about if Agung blows. However, now I'm hearing about people in Kerobokan taking serious precautions and starting to worry. Any suggestions besides pray the ash cloud doesn't come this way or move south to a hotel for a while?

Heavy rain last night in Ubud, I wonder how people are facing this problem on the tents or the bale banjars. I haven't feel any more small earthquakes for a few days, is this good sign? Already one week passed after the red alert. Not really much information around.

The volcano going quiet is neither a positive or negative sign. I read an article on it just the other day. Sorry don't have the link. Apparently this is common with volcanoes.

According to Wiki.... in 1963 the Agung was gurgling and spewing smoke and lava spilled to the north for a month before it blew its top 10Kms into the air. It also blew again two months later. The wind direction in Denpasar during [COLOR=#ff0000]March (1963)[/COLOR] is predominantly out of the [I][COLOR=#ff0000]east[/COLOR][/I][COLOR=#ff0000] from [/COLOR][I][COLOR=#ff0000]March 17[/COLOR][/I][COLOR=#ff0000] to [/COLOR][I][COLOR=#ff0000]March 31[/COLOR][/I]. The prevailing wind for the next month is generally from the S.E. (112 degrees) and velocity much lower than now...(notice less kites) so ash will float north and west away from the south (Sanur/Nusa Dua/Kuta) ...at least that's the theory.

I agree with the general consensus but, like the boy scout motto...."Be Prepared." I would stock up on masks...the best is model Besten N95...you can still get in Bali but they're jacking the price. I just ordered a packet of 20 from Tokopedia for Rp100,500. The general wind at this time of year is from the south and east which should blow any ash NW but the wind could change and ash, being very light, can become a problem over any parts of Bali. It's unlikely that any actual rocks etc would reach outside the 12 km danger area but Mt St Helens, near Seattle, blew out sideways and killed people over 35 kms away. Just watched Bali's Governor Pastika make an angry speech on TV. Apparently, out of the approx. 120,000 evacuees there are many who don't even live in the danger area. He's distributing a card to all those whose residency is within the 12 km area. The rest will not get cards, or the benefits from the generous contributions or gov't handouts, and advised to go home.
