Denpasar House, thanks for walking us through this. Yes, Windows Defender is on. And amazingly after all that, the system is working okay. In resetting I had lost the Picasa download with all my pics and when I went to reload found that it has been eaten by Google photos.
Attempts to work out how to retrieve the lost pics by using Google "Help" were frustrating as you just get these automated suggestions which don't actually relate to the problem. I eventually came across a website that gave a link as to how to reload Picasa even though Google said it is gone and dusted. So I got the pics back and will store them on a USB mindful that Google promise never to update or help out with Picasa in future. The big advantage with Picasa is that I can downsize images to JPGs for email whereas I couldn't find that facility on Google Photo. It may well be there but I suspect that 3/4s of our personal random access memory is cluttered up with all the stuff memorizing instructions that have become redundant and my tiny brain protests when I try to learn something new. .
The only residual frustration is that no matter how carefuly I follow the instructions to make google search the default or Chrome as the default, Microsoft somehow manage to keep control. Not a big issue as I can work around that and (crossed fingers) things are working without having to spend money on going to a computer tech.
