Tertiary Education in Indonesia

Hi all, One of my nieces is particularly bright and has decided to follow her uncle and pursue a career in science (maybe she aint that bright....). She starts her 12th (and final year) soon and will no doubt wish to continue on to tertiary level education of some description. Does anybody have any information regarding tertiary level education in Indonesia? My level of understanding is limited but it seems that there is possibly 3 different streams being public universities, private universities and religious universities (to be avoided!) Further, is anybody aware of the cost of the different options? As my wife and I have no kids we have always made funding our nieces/nephews education a priority and would like to gift the best level of education we can afford them . Would like to start planning for the future and be prepared for what we will be looking at down the track. Unfortunately the other 3 only had aspirations to be motorbike mechanics and motherhood (not yet, thankfully) so we haven't crossed this path yet. Cheers in advance.

I asked my wife about this and she said there is more corruption in public universities. The lecturers are paid less. But if you want to work in government then it is better to go to a public university. My Christian wife went to an Islamic private university. Maybe look into scholarships for universities overseas...

Is your niece looking at studying in Bali or somewhere else? I wouldn’t be overly worried about levels of “corruption” because it’s everywhere (even in religious institutions). Par for the course (no pun). Arguably, the “best” university in Bali is Udayana with two main locations (Denpasar and Jimbaran). I can’t find the current tuition fees but they were something like: Local students about US $1,000 per year (depending on course). International students between US $2,500-5,000 per year. Thank you both greatly for your replies. She would almost certainly be going to a University in Java and in particular either Banyuwangi Politeknik which is closest to home or either Jember University or Politeknik (where we have other family). Mum (my sis-in-law) is particularly paranoid about her not getting mixed up with boys so would be wanting to keep a close eye on her. Good to know about about your wife doing so well coming out of an Islamic University - clearly my interpretation of what they might be is way off the mark. I would have expected them to be about Islamic mumbo jumbo 1st and real education 2nd but if your Christian wife is thriving then clearly they do provide some positive academic outcomes. Would love to have her out here studying at an Australian University but unfortunately I doubt her level of english would be up to the standard where she would flourish too well. Compounding the difficulty is my wife and I live regional so would struggle to be able to provide the support or mentoring that she might require. I do have other family members who live in the city but none of them have any formal scientific background or training. Will definately look into it though, in this hi-tech age I am not entirely sure how much actual campus time is required anymore, could be a lot more online content than my days of lecture hall after lecture hall after lecture hall. The price is surprising also - wish my Degree's cost that much (little)! 'Tis all relative though (you get what you pay for). Thank you kindly once again, Adam
