Hi everyone! I am looking to move from the USA to Bali in December 2017. I'm currently in Bali on a short holiday (my third time here). I'm a teacher back home and will be needing information on work and housing, etc.
Thank you, and I look forward to talking with you all

Hi Starla and welcome to the Bali forum.
If you are looking to work as a teacher in Indonesia you will need ta acquaint yourself with the rules of employing a foreigner...it isn't easy. I suggest you get to know some teachers so you will avoid the pitfalls others have encountered. There are many clandestine language mills that say they are legit and will get you an IMTA (work permit) but they lie and you could get into trouble with the Ministry of Manpower and Immigration..... be careful..

Hi Davita, thank you for your reply. I will be sure to watch out for that; I don't want to get in trouble for visa problems. Closer to my move date I will be in touch with some schools that I have been researching. Most likely I will have to wait until the 2017/2018 school year ends in June before getting a job anyways. Hopefully during that time I can meet other teachers near Kuta and gather a lot of information.

Why wait? You should use all the time you have available!

Hi Daniel! I had thought about that but then it occurred to me that they might get tons of people saying they are moving to Bali and are looking for jobs, yet never do. But you're right, start building relationships and getting my name out there is a good thing! I still have about 8 months and oh SO much to do to prepare (at least it feels that way). I will send out introductory emails next week and see how it goes :)

Just imagine if Tintin had gotten the job - Bali could be a nuclear power today and Kim Jung would be hanging here looking for some tips on how to build rockets and stuff.

...or I would be filthy rich now, because I could have easily been bribed!

Things can take some wild turns in Bali. Way back in the early 1980's , after couple of visits I had decided to explore living full time in Bali. So, I needed a way to survive, and since Bali does not need nuclear physicists, I decided to apply for a teaching job (I had also taught, but at the university level in the US for several years) in one of the couple of private schools on the island, at the time, but I understand that now there are many more. I did get a positive, but also bewildered answer from the Head of the Balinese school, and this started an exchange of letters and faxes (in those days, no emails). She was in favor of my being hired by the school, but their were several other members on the school board who were rather skeptical about how/why a nuclear physicist, having worked and taught at the prestigious California Institute of Technology, would, all of the sudden, want to teach little expat kids in Bali. During our exchanges, over several months, this person was going to get married to a Balinese man from Sukawati. Two weeks before the wedding, he got ran over on his bicycle by a car. The lady then married his brother instead (Some kind of Balinese tradition?). This was obviously a rather stressful time for her, and we stopped corresponding for several more months. When she resurfaced, she was back in the US, her marriage with the brother having collapsed rather rapidly...I never heard from her again, and obviously, my mentor at the Int'l School gone, I did not get hired!

Hi everybody!
My boyfriend and I are from South Africa and will be teaching English at a school in Denpasar for the next year. We arrived a few days ago and are currently staying in an airbnb guesthouse while looking for longer-term rentals. That has proven to be extremely difficult. Does anyone have some advice as to how to go about looking for either a small apartment (with a kitchen and a lounge) or a small house?
I would really appreciate any and all feedback!
Hope to hear from you soon!

Hello
You could try here:
http://baliadvertiser.biz/current-ads/real-estate-ads/
I'd guess there would also be facebook but I can't help there.
Also, just walk around the area you might be interested and see if there any ads posted on house fronts (di sewa = for rent). Ask in local bars/restaurants, put the word out that you are looking. There are plenty of places for rent that won't be advertised online.
Where is the school you will be teaching? That would give people a better understanding of what might be out there in your area.
Good luck with your search.

You're actually spoilt for choice if you want a nice apartment but most of the ads are in Indonesian. See here:

Here in the east I know personally of about 3 nice places going: 1) wooden joglo needing some work, 2) an apartment on the main road and possibly a bamboo house with ground. All are in the south of the Amlapura.

“Denpasar” is a big area. For example, Sanur is technically a southern suburb of Denpasar.
As SamD said, it would help to know the location of the school and depending where that is, how long are you prepared to travel to it. Is it a government school or maybe a private English learning centre? What are the working hours? Do you need a decent internet connection? Have your own transport? Etc.
There are some “up-market” KOSTS in some areas for about Rp 3 million/month. I’m sure you’ll find something suitable – how long, I don’t know.
Oh, and disregard Markit’s suggestions of places in Amlapura (east Bali). Ridiculously too far away from Denpasar unless you have your own helicopter and somewhere to land it.
Many years ago, I placed an ad in a local Indonesian newspaper looking for a house in or near Sanur. I had people ringing me from Singaraja (north Bali) and my favourite was someone on Lombok (the next island east of here). Markit’s suggestion joins that group.

Hi there Balipod community!
I am a doctor with a young family thinking about moving to Bali for a few years. I grew up in Jakarta and have been a frequent Bali-visitor in the past.
We welcome advice/suggestions/ideas, have done a bit of homework already and have done a couple of test trips.
Wondering if anyone knew if places like BIMC employ Australian Docs? I know that I cannot practice medically in the public systems in Indonesia, but the privates may be a different story.
Catch you on the forums!

Welcome to the forum!
I don't believe foreign doctors can practice privately or publicly in Indonesia. If they could I am sure they would have a lot of customers!
You might be able to practice in a consulting/managerial role at a hospital like BIMC.
It is a shame as foreign expertise is definitely needed.
drben
Thanks Spicyayam - thought this might be the case. When I was reading BIMC's career page it was not clear - I also thought one of their head clinicians was Australian.

Hi there,
My name is Amy and I'm very grateful to be part of this insightful forum!
After travelling to Bali a number of times over the years, my partner and I are looking to do a few longer stays during 2020/2021/indefinite future.
We're both into surfing/diving/the outdoors and are lucky enough to live on the coast of Australia.
Very much looking forward to gaining some valuable knowledge from this group :)
Cheers!
Amy

At the moment, I'm after some advice on long-term rentals in Canggu/Sanur/Kerobokan areas.
I've made a separate post on it already
