You do not have to leave, if you have started the process you can extend your visa (5th) no problems. Your wife will need to do some running around to different departments to have letters signed, but it's not that hard and don't need to go to your embassy for anything. Best to have a folder with 10 copies of everything you can think of, they always ask for extra copy. Most immigration officer have no idea of the rule & process ,so search the forum , you will then know the process so you can steer your wife in the right direction.
Fred2...are you sure the above is correct advice? My understanding is the sosbud is generally only valid for a total of 180 days. This includes the first 60 days + 4 extensions of 30 days each to complete 180 days. This is clarified by my copy/paste from a Travel Co.website...."The social & culture visa ( Visa Index 211) is a single entry visa that cannot be used for working but for all activities which have connection with government, tourism, social and culture, it is given 60 (sixty) days, then extendable 4 times every 30 days. This visa can be sponsored individually."However, I do agree the OP should contact Immigration with his issue and see if they can give a dispensation......rules/laws, especially in RI, are often ignored.

As a mater of fact, I have not extended it up to 180 days jet !I got VISA in Singapore (type 211) for 30 days (I applied for 60 day Sosial Budaya Visa but got only 30 days) ! And I already extended it in here 4 for times ! (30+30+30+30) ! (total around 150 days)Before 2 years I got extended 5th time (when I got only 30 day 211 type visa sticker in my passport) without a problem ! But last year (and this one) immigration counter workers were telling me even If I get 30 day visa or 60 day one .. no mater it is possible to extend it only 4 times !And again on the other hand .. last week counter officer in immigration was convincing me that apply for KITAs is possible only after 2y of living in Indonesia ! When asked (by my wife) to point the pasal (rule) where is such thing stated (coz it doesnt have sense beside that all ppl. told me othervise)... he felt insulted .. And told me that I can talk with his supervisor :( (and he was wrong, coz supervisor said it is possible)Ah we will see this week what it is going to be ! Prepare for the worst hoping for the best ...

I don't deal with agents, travel web sites or black magic .I only deal with immigration, when you start the process you are covered, immigration will take your passport and renew your visa you will have to pay of course . This is a rule for only Indonesia so Bali may be different.

In Jakarta I never tried for a 5th extension....so I don't know. Now I'm on a retirement visa I HAVE to use an agent so DIY with Immigration for me, unfortunately, is not available......maybe I should use black magic!
Fred2
Davita the process starts with handing your passport in with your paper work, they keep your passport until the Kitas stamp is processed. That's why you normally start on your 3th extension & should be finished with in the month, if not it will be extended.
Markit
That's almost too reasonable to be believed. It's almost like in real life isn't it?
davita
Ok Fred2 I get it. You are advising odez999 that his Sosbud will be extended automatically as his passport is at Immigrasi undergoing the process from Sosbud to Kitas.I thought you were giving general info on extending Sosbuds. My bad.

Last friday I was on "interview"All went ok .. miracle ! No much questions asked ... just needed to go and photocopy a bunch (10-15 docs and forms) for them again in nearby building !They did actually asked for documents from catatan sipil (civil marriage documents) but we explained that that is not neccesery since ceremony was moslem one (he could see that by provided papers)! He did not insist ! But is indicative that catatan sipil doc. is more reliable wherever, thats why my advice especially if you are going outside Indo. try to obtaind doc for marriage from catatan sipil (civil marriage court) as well ! ( I have feeling that only religous doc wont be enough everywhere in the world)Above all we needed ORIGINAL Karta Keluarga - K.K. (Family Tree Document) .. wich is some sort of A4 light blue format paper wich states family members (obtained where family reside) and kept usually with parents !So my advice is after the marriage make new KK for wife ... or obtain duplicat (ORIGINAL) one from place where her family is ! You will need it !All was finished and i was advised to apply on regular counter again .. in there they gave me paper and told me to come again after 7 days !whats next .. have no clue !

Pardon the possibly stupid question but when you finally have the married visa stating you are hitched with an Indonesian person you still do not have unrestricted right to work and live here? I can't think of any other country in the world where marriage partners of countries citizens are treated as 2nd class. But what do I know?
Smoke
Well technically you can "help" your wife out in her biz since it all goes to "feeding and housing" the family but shhh

It is needed by the courts to correctly protect you the non indo spouse for future when you legally by property with your RI spouse.More coming on prenups and notorious once i have completed the process.

Yes.. so far I understood their laws ... you are NOT ALLOWED TO BE EMPLOYED or to be in working relationship ... etc ..etc ... even if you are married and got spouse KITAS! (apparently you need other type to be able to be employed in Indonesia)they will say it is in "national interest" this or that ! (nationalism for me seems exactly like religion .. spice to life like sugar and salt .. in bigger doses harm your health or causes death)Retarded laws on so many levels ! But what can you do ...Just look what ethnic chinese had to go trought in here ... among genocids in history ... legal status seems like piece of cake !And again .. I know Indonesian Chinese wealthy businessman in his mid 30s whos parents 2y ago did NOT ALLOWED/AGREED him to marry Java girl (but insisted on ethnic chinese one) ... that also aint right on so many levels .. so .. things aint so simple !

Odez, or anyone really, is it possible to marry an Indonesian and just work like an Indonesian - apparently not. So what visa do (married to Indo) expats need to be able to just get a fecking job here like you do in any other country in the world? Not, I hasten to add, do I, in any way, want a job!!! Or to get married. Just idle curiosity.
spicyayam
At least there has been an improvement in the immigration laws for foreigners married to Indonesians. Sure, it is not perfect, but at least the situation is better than before. At least in our case immigration were fairly helpful to get the KITAP.
Markit
But even with a Kitap there are lots of restrictions or?
