In some ways, the transition is never ending. Some aspects "smoothe", others bordering nightmarish.
For me, I've been living here for more than 20 years and occasionally think I'm still in transition.
Kind of like the longer you're here, the less you know.
I regularly meet Balinese who weren't even born yet when I first came here (in 1973). In that sense, I was lucky enough to see a version of Bali that's hard to find these days. Most Balinese I've met haven't really been anywhere (not even adjacent islands such as Java or Lombok). And many haven't even explored their own Bali (what's left of it).
Ha ha, with 3 years less than you but having the same feeling, always they surprise me! in my case I use to say, the longer I am here, the less I know or understand them. I feel like we are in two different planets.
You are right, they don't travel around Bali, only move for work or for going to temples ceremonies but I guess they have not money, interest or time to travel around, too busy with ceremonies, jobs and family. In a way their life is so complex.
But I think there is changing a little bit now and young people start little by little going around some places in Bali.
What really always surprise me is to see the long queue there is always at the inmigration office for doing the passports!!
