Looking for land to build on

So, at last we have decided to build something in Bali. Initially a holiday home but eventually somewhere to live (or die, whatever) We have seen a few plots around Ubud but wondered if anybody has any inside information on some bargains out there. Not looking for views or a sheep station, a normal block enough for a house, swimming pool, small garden and a lap-dancing bar. Must be freehold. We are planning to be in Bali in June sometime so no rush. Thanks Sam

Ubud will cost arms and legs. If money is not option and you love mozzies/chinese tourists/tree huggers then off you go. It will have to be Lap dancing Yoga there... I know some cheaper places here in Karangasem if you are interested then come by (buy) and have a look.

Thanks Nakal, not really interested in South Bali though. We already have a small place in Jimbaran. Markit, I'd be interested in checking out Karangasem but would have to convince 'her indoors'. We usually spend a few days in Amed on our trips so might arrange to pop by and have a chat. Ubud isn't that bad, as long as you stay out of the centre.

Pros: 1. Close to the highway for easy access to Denpasar and the airport. 2. Close to 2 regional cities for easy shopping. 3. Close to the surfing beaches. 4. Easy access to the highway for trips to the east. Cons: 1. Probably no local supermarkets. You'd always have to make a trip. 2. Probably no local hospitals that are worth a damn. 3. No good schools if you've got kids.

Any idea of Rp/Are? The places I have seen around Ubud are 125m-135m/Are. Quite a lot when you think what you are paying for a 10mx10m piece of dirt.

Sam if you can get ANYTHING around Ubud for that price - run a mile. I promise you it's got all kinds of problems. Back 9 years ago when I first got to Bali that was the price of some rice fields waaaay outside of Ubud. Now for anything freehold you are looking at 1 - 2 billion/are near Ubud, down town it's 3 - 4. If that price was leasehold then it prob has only a few years to run or access problems. But what do I know?

I thought it was cheap too. But it is listed on a well known Ubud r/e site as freehold (am I allowed to quote the name?). But they won't tell me the map reference, only the general location which is 8k from Ubud centre. Don't know the reason they won't give me or my brother-in-law in Bali the reference, probably some misguided idea I will go behind their backs to the owner. An odd way to do business. At this stage, I'm not following up with them. They don't reply to emails so my attitude is F*** 'em.

Yeah, I've never understood why that area seems so ignored either. Fact is there was not much in the way of western amenities like restos/shopping/hotels/etc but that is beginning to change with some large hotel developments and lots of small warungs starting to be built. Not to forget the new Hardys that is largely empty now but has all their usual goodies - may not last long there so don't make that a deciding factor. The hospital in Semurapura is quite a good size - don't know about it's abilities and don't want to find out. If you do decide to live there you will have the place pretty much for yourself, expat wise, but there's always the crazy Dutch that have lived in one corner or the other forever - you just need to teach them how to eat and talk some language again.

Get hook in mouth and reel in slowly... A well known Ubud estate agent will only take you around his properties if you pay him 100k. Says too many people were using him as a free tour guide haha! It's a jingle out there, said Gene Kelly.

Was his name Basil Fawlty by any chance? My BIL says he could probably locate that piece of land from the pictures and find out who the owner is anyway. I'm not in any hurry, we'll be there in June and do some research while singin' in the rain. Cheers.
