  1. Colon Cancer in Bali

As promised I'd write a blog on my decision to be operated for colon cancer (tumour) in a Bali hospital when I'd made some recovery from the surgery. My intent is to inform others who may face a similar decision of having surgery here, or elsewhere.

    1. I don't have any medical insurance, due to age, so cost was a factor.
    2. I'm a Canadian citizen in Bali on a Kitap and I'd probably qualify for free-care back in Vancouver. We made a few calls and found I'd be on a waiting list ...

  2. Colonoscopy versus Colon Cancer

A Colonoscopy was something referred by a Doctor when in a serious medical condition...or so I thought...and yet I was religious in having my annual medical exam in Vancouver, Canada..... which sports a fine Provincial Medical Services Plan (MSP). The finger up the bum for a prostate check was standard and could include the blood test (this was for the patient's own account as not covered by BC MSP) but I don't recall a Colonoscopy ever being mentioned in the subject of standard medical check-ups. ...

  3. Prenuptials..

I was sitting in my local pub in Bali when in walked an elderly guy looking forlorn and sat at the stool next to me. He ordered a beer and I could tell, by his accent, he was an Ozzie. He let out a sigh as he slurped half the beer in one gulp. I said “What's up...had a bad day?” He slurped the other half then ordered another. “A terrible week” he said to me. As I am considerably older than he I cautioned myself...but, nevertheless, asked “Want to talk about it?” “OK!” he responded “it's like this.” ...

  4. Happy 70th Independance Day Indonesia.

I was very interested to read (Minister of Culture and Primary/Secondary Education) Anies Baswedan's contribution to Jplus (Sunday Aug 16) called 'Room to Try', as well as Anita Othman's 'Citizen of the World'. Both were similar, but from different perspectives, of what Indonesian national pride should look and how that can be developed to be better as Indonesia moves forward. Anies disagrees with some who say that young Indonesians who go overseas for education, or further personal development, ...

The three days celebration of the Balinese calendar for new year 1937 is over.

Last Wednesday/Thursday was the day that Balinese gather in their thousands and walk to the nearest beach to bathe previous sins, ill health and bad spirits away. They believe the ocean has healing power but the traffic jam they create causes more pollution than modern day China.

Friday around sunset is for the big parades...all over Bali the villagers (banjar) bring out their Ogoh Ogoh, ...

  6. New Year in Jakarta

New Years Eve is the same in Jakarta as in any other major city...it entails fireworks!

Jakarta is different to other major cities as it doesn't have a mass transit system. The standard method of travel is car, motor cycle, clapped out buses, backs of trucks...oh! I nearly forgot the ubiquitous TransJakarta Busway...the biggest joke!
Consequently, New Years Eve is not a time to be 'caught in traffic' as it will be February before one gets home. It is 'managed chaos' which is ...

One objective of our recent trip to Vancouver was to end with attending a wedding in Seattle, then return to our home in Bali......so our plans were laid early but, like the grand proverb by Scot Rabbie Burns 'The best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley' .... our plan had to change when the wedding was delayed a week.

  9. The Parrot and the Cock

In Western societies status and wealth are often indicated by possessions such as yachts, houses, automobiles and other luxury items the majority cannot afford. In Indonesia, it is not much different. Also, in Indonesia, there are more subtle ways to show rank and power. One is possessing exotic birds. If a colourful Cock/Hen is observed in a cage in front of a house, one is immediately notified that the occupants believe they are more important than the neighbors.

Many many years ago, when I was young and a little reckless, I joined a group who were similarly dysfunctional. We were arrogant swaggers, pretentious and loud. It was in Malaya that we connected. This was before Merdeka and even before the ‘new’ Singaporean authorities really clamped down on youth ...
