President: Indonesia Still Reviewing Potential BRICS Membership

Speaking at the 15th BRICS Summit, which was held at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg, President Jokowi emphasized that Indonesia will still review and consider its participation to become a BRICS member, saying that “we need to calculate it first, we don’t want to be in a hurry.”

According to a press release on the website of The President of The Republic of Indonesia, President Jokowi said that Indonesia’s relations with the BRICS member countries are currently considered very good, especially in the economic field.

In addition, the Head of State also said that one of the processes that must be passed to become a new BRICS member is by submitting an expression of interest . The President revealed that until now Indonesia had not submitted the letter.

“To become a new member of the BRICS, a country must submit a letter of expression of interest , all must submit the letter, and until now Indonesia has not submitted the letter,” said the President.

Reuters report that The BRICS bloc of developing nations agreed on Thursday to admit Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates in a move aimed at accelerating its push to reshuffle a world order it sees as outdated. The six new candidates will formally become members on Jan. 1, 2024, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said when he named the countries during a three-day leaders’ summit he is hosting in Johannesburg.

In deciding in favour of an expansion, the bloc’s first in 13-years, BRICS leaders left the door open to future enlargement as dozens more countries voiced interest in joining a grouping they hope can level the global playing field.
