The 2023 Island and Island Countries Forum Summit (AIS), which will be hosted by Indonesia in Nusa Dua from 10 – 11 October is expected to be attended by representatives of 51-archipelago and island countries, with a target of 25-representatives at head of state/ government level and 30 to 47-representatives at ministerial level, according to reporting from Antara News Bali.
Director General of Information and Public Communications of the Ministry of Communication and Information, Usman Kansong, said in a press briefing in Jakarta, Monday (18/09/23) that the AIS Forum Summit will also be attended by nine heads of international organizations, including the Pacific Island Countries Forum (PIF), the Melanesian Cooperation Group (MSG), the Caribbean Community Group of States (CARICOM), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and by heads or leaders from intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, including the United Nations (UN), World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF), Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the Indian Ocean Rim States Association (IORA).
According to Usman, the main aim of holding this year’s AIS Forum Summit is to establish the AIS Forum as an international organization based on an agreement/ charter.
Antara News Bali say that the main theme promoted at the 2023 AIS Forum Summit will be “Fostering Collaboration, Enabling Innovation For Our Ocean And Our Future.”
Furthermore, there are sub-themes from the forum, which include the Blue Economy, Our Oceans, Our Future and Solidarity.
The Blue Economy sub-theme aims to make the blue economy a driver, recovery and transformation of the economy of island/ archipelagic countries to build community livelihoods based on environmental sustainability.
Our Ocean, Our Future aims to emphasize concern over the real threat of climate change which has an impact on the future of the ocean and the future of the population of island and archipelagic countries throughout the world.
Meanwhile, the Solidarity sub-theme aims to emphasize three main principles, namely interdependence, mutual aid and mutual benefit.
The 51-countries participating in the AIS Forum are Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belize, Cape Verde, Cooks Islands, Comoros, Cuba, Cyprus, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Kiribati, Madagascar, Maldives, Malta, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Nauru, Niue, New Zealand, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Timor Leste, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Tonga, United Kingdom and Vanuatu.
