Indonesia, China sign MoUs on Minerals

Indonesia and China signed two strategic memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in the mineral sector during President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit to Beijing, China on Saturday (9/11/24,) according to reporting from Antara News.

The first MoU on green mineral cooperation was signed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia and Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and was witnessed by the presidents of the two countries.

According to a statement issued by the ESDM Ministry, the second MoU on mineral resources cooperation was signed by Lahadalia and Zheng Shanjie, chair of the China National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

“The MoUs mark a new chapter in the strategic cooperation between Indonesia and China,” Lahadalia said after the signing.

According to the Indonesian minister, the collaboration will not only strengthen the sustainable mineral supply chain, but also encourage significant investment in clean energy development in both countries, says Antara News, adding that the cooperation reflects the two countries’ seriousness in realizing the global commitment to speed up the sustainable energy transition.

“Together, we contribute to achieving the global goal of a just and inclusive energy transition,” he said.

The NDRC and China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) are two Chinese government agencies authorized to approve outbound investments from China.

The MoU on green minerals cooperation signed with MOFCOM aims to encourage the development of the green minerals industry, starting from the level of mining to downstreaming, in Indonesia.

This aligns with the shared commitment of both countries to combat climate change.

Meanwhile, the MoU on mineral resources signed with NDRC will focus on the development and utilization of minerals that are needed in modern industry. The cooperation is expected to boost investment and strengthen a safe and sustainable supply chain of mineral resources, according to Antara News.
