Terminal 4 Project at Soekarno-Hatta Airport Cancelled

Speaking at the Senayan Parliament Complex on Monday (4/11/24,) Indonesia’s State-Owned Enterprises, Minister Erick Thohir officially announced the cancellation of the Terminal 4 project at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten, according to reporting from Tempo. Instead of constructing a new terminal, the government will focus on optimizing and upgrading the existing Terminals 1, 2, and 3.

“We must ensure efficient use of all projects, the benchmarks are clear: not wasteful. Therefore, we decided to cancel Terminal 4,” he said

The Terminal 4 project, initiated during President Jokowi’s administration in 2019, was estimated to cost IDR 14 trillion. However, after careful evaluation, the minister concluded that the project was unnecessary and that upgrading the existing terminals, which require a budget of approximately IDR1 trillion, would suffice to increase passenger capacity, says Tempo.

“Terminals 1, 2, and 3 can be maximized by improving both the lanes and spaces or rooms,” he remarked.

Tempo reports that the Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to efficient and transparent project management and to avoiding corruption scandals that have plagued SOE projects in the past five years.

Previously, President Jokowi set a target of completing Terminal 4 by 2021 to boost Soekarno-Hatta Airport’s passenger capacity to 110 million per year. “We aim to accommodate 110 million passengers annually with the addition of Terminal 4,” he said during an inspection of Runway 3 at the airport in June 2019.
