HydroWing to Launch Tidal Energy Project in Indonesia

According to reporting from Renewables Now, HydroWing, the tidal energy unit of UK-based Inyanga Marine Energy Group, has announced that it has signed a binding agreement with a subholding of Indonesia’s state-owned power utility PT PLN to develop plans for the Southeast Asian country’s first tidal current power plant with a capacity of 10 MW in East Nusa Tenggara.

The agreement follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding in 2022.

CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, Richard Parkinson, said that Indonesia is seen as a prime market for the company’s tidal energy technology. “Indonesia has amongst the best tidal potential in the world due to the throughflow of marine current from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean. There is also a funnel effect between the islands of the archipelago, which strengthens the tidal energy potential still further,” he said.

Jean-Christophe Allo, commercial manager at Inyanga Marine Energy Group, noted that this new project comes after earlier this year the company was awarded a contract to build a tidal energy plant at Capul in the Philippines, says Renewables Now.

The PLN subholding will manage tasks such as site survey, sediment samples and interconnection impact studies, while HydroWing will conduct a feasibility study, technology studies, project implementation schedules and operations and maintenance (O&M) plans. The two companies will collaborate on the licensing process plan and on social and environmental studies.
