Operation Zebra Aims to Reduce Traffic Accidents

Tempo is reporting that the Traffic Corps of the Indonesian National Police will conduct Operation Zebra 2024 for two weeks, starting Monday (14/10/24) targeting motorized vehicle drivers with a focus on reducing traffic accidents.

“The police invite the entire community to always comply with traffic regulations, both during operations and outside of operation periods,” said the Chief of Operational Section (Kabagops) of the Traffic Corps of the Indonesian National Police, Commissioner Aries Syahbudin in a written statement on Sunday (13/10/24,) says Tempo.

He stated that disciplined traffic participants are not only to avoid penalties but also to ensure their own safety and the safety of other road users. The implementation of Operation Zebra 2024 will prioritize dissemination and education for road users. Officers will give more warnings to traffic violators, especially for violations that often cause accidents. Some of them are not wearing helmets, going against the traffic flow, and exceeding the speed limit.

The electronic ticketing system or electronic traffic law enforcement (E-TLE) will also continue during this operation to detect violators by surveillance cameras, reports Tempo, adding that the use of the E-TLE system will be increased to cover more vulnerable violation points. In addition, the Traffic Corps officers will still issue manual tickets for violators.

On the other hand, the latest data from the Traffic Corps of the Indonesian National Police recorded a total of 110,528 traffic accident cases in Indonesia in 2013. There were 18,357 fatalities due to these accidents. Meanwhile, there were 11,689 victims who suffered severe injuries and 134,811 victims with minor injuries.

It was also noted by the Traffic Corps that the majority of fatalities were in the productive age range. “The majority of the deceased victims are in the productive age group,” explained the Chief of the Traffic Corps Inspector General Aan Suhanan in his statement. “So we expect traffic safety to become a necessity.”
