Russia Ready to Offer Indonesia Nuclear Power Plants

According to reporting from Tempo, Russia’s state-owned nuclear company, Rosatom, has announced in Russian media, Sputnik, that they are ready to offer large and small capacity nuclear power plants (NPPs) to Indonesia.

“As for the energy technologies that we are ready to offer Indonesia for the development of joint projects in nuclear energy, we can talk about both high-power stations and small modular reactors,” said Rosatom‘s International Business Director, Boris Arseev, as reported by Antara News.

According to Arseev, Rosatom has been actively sharing its experience with Indonesian colleagues responsible for the development of the energy sector in the country.

Arseev said that the decision to have nuclear capacity must be taken by Indonesia according to its needs. He ensured that the technology developed by Rosatom was reliable and safe. “The effectiveness of which has been proven by time,” he said.

According to Arseev, in terms of large capacity, Rosatom’s flagship product is Generation III+ power units with VVER-1200 reactors.

“Rosatom was the first company in the world to launch a Generation III+ unit. This is the most advanced technology, which fully complies with all ‘post-Fukushima’ safety standards and combines its active and passive systems, having several safety barriers,” he explained.

Tempo reports that the nuclear power plant is also able to withstand extreme external impacts such as floods, tsunamis, hurricanes, and earthquakes. “The seismic protection system of nuclear power plants; a pressing issue for Indonesia, has clearly demonstrated its effectiveness at the Akkuyu NPP (in Turkey),” Arseev said.

Arseev also stressed that the Russian company holds the “palm of victory” in small-capacity nuclear power plant technology.
