KPU Set to Declare Prabowo as President-Elect

Local newswires, including Jakarta Globe, are reporting that Indonesia’s General Election Commission (KPU) is set to formally declare Prabowo Subianto as the elected president during a ceremony on Wednesday (24/4/24,) according to schedule.

The announcement by KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy’ari came hours after the Constitutional Court rejected legal motions by defeated candidates Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo challenging Prabowo’s victory.

“In light of today’s court ruling, we move to the next phase of the election namely to declare the elected president and vice president scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the KPU headquarters,” Hasyim said.

Prabowo and his running Gibran Rakabuming Raka won the election with 58 percent of the vote, according to the national tally announced on March 20, says Jakarta Globe, adding that his campaign celebrations were put on hold following legal challenges from rival candidates Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who sought to annul the result and demand a revote.

The plaintiffs alleged widespread voter fraud, favoritism, and perceived government support that purportedly gave an unfair advantage to Prabowo and Gibran, who is the eldest son of the president.

In a 5-3 vote on Monday, the Constitutional Court ruled that both Anies and Ganjar had failed to present compelling evidence and credible witnesses to support their claims, thereby rejecting their motion in its entirety, according to Jakarta Globe.
