Indonesia Combats Digital Fraud with Integrated Anti-Scam Center

Digital financial fraud and crimes are becoming increasingly sophisticated, prompting urgent action from Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi).

To tackle this growing issue, these 2 institutions are joining forces by integrating two key platforms.

Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, confirmed the integration of Cekrekening.id and the Anti-Scam Center (ASC) under the OJK. The systems will connect via an Open Application Programming Interface (API) for seamless integration.

“This initiative aims to enhance digital literacy, helping the public distinguish between accounts flagged for potential digital financial crimes and those deemed secure,” Meutya explained, as reported by rri.co.id.

Anti-Scam Center Finalization Underway

OJK Chairman Mahendra Siregar revealed that the Anti-Scam Center is nearing its final development phase. Once launched, it will expand its coverage to include fraud in marketplace transactions.

“The Anti-Scam Center will address not only payment and banking fraud but also fraudulent activities occurring within marketplaces,” Mahendra stated during a joint press conference with Komdigi on Thursday, November 14, 2024

Mahendra emphasized that this integration aims to bolster the system’s resilience in countering illegal financial activities across banking, payment systems, and marketplaces.

“We are finalizing efforts to strengthen the center’s capabilities comprehensively, ensuring swift and effective responses to unlawful financial activities,” he added.

Accelerating Service and Cybersecurity

Mahendra also underscored ongoing improvements to the Anti-Scam Center’s Service Level Agreement (SLA), which will reduce response times and enhance reliability in addressing cyber threats.

In addition, Komdigi is preparing advanced technologies to track fraudulent activities in bank accounts and digital wallet applications. The Open API system, a software interface allowing third-party developers access, will play a crucial role in this initiative.

Bank Indonesia has already adopted Open API technology to monitor online payments, serving as a model for other regulatory frameworks.

Enhancing Public Access and Awareness

Cekrekening.id, a platform developed by Komdigi, enables the public to report and verify accounts associated with fraud or other crimes. Meanwhile, the recently launched Anti-Scam Center by OJK leverages its PUSAKA system (Fraud Transaction Handling Center) to address digital financial scams.

With these tools, individuals reporting fraud to the Anti-Scam Center are also considered to have filed a report with the police, making it easier for victims to seek justice.

The integration of these platforms, combined with Open API technology, is expected to improve public access to information, streamline the reporting process, and raise awareness about potential cyber threats.

A Coordinated Effort for Digital Security

This collaborative effort between the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) reflects a commitment to strengthening digital financial security.

By integrating cutting-edge technologies, the initiative aims to create a more coordinated, efficient, and effective approach to combating digital fraud, ensuring better protection which are more coordinated, efficient, and effective for online financial service users and enhancing trust in Indonesia’s financial sector.
