Indonesia’s Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Minister, Basuki Hadimuljono, has said that construction of the runway, taxi lane, and apron at the Nusantara Airport in IKN, East Kalimantan, is complete, according to reporting from Antara News.
“The construction has been completed. Tomorrow, President Jokowi will review it,” he said in Jakarta on Wednesday (11/9/24.)
The minister clarified that the operation of the airport’s runway hinged on its functional feasibility, which came under the transportation minister’s authority.
“This will depend on the minister of transportation because its functional feasibility is their responsibility. The transportation minister has placed a functional feasibility test team there,” Hadimuljono added, saying that only lighting was needed at the Nusantara Airport’s runway.
The minister plans on leaving for IKN on Wednesday.
Currently, the Transportation Ministry is conducting a calibration process for all facilities and equipment at Nusantara Airport to ensure its operational readiness in accordance with flight safety standards.
The airport calibration process is conducted to ensure flight safety and security, in addition to ensuring that the operation of air transportation support equipment runs correctly and accurately, says Antara News, adding that calibration is the initial stage of a series of evaluations conducted to ensure flight safety and security at an airport. This process includes setting and testing landing aid equipment such as radar and navigation systems.
The King Air 350i aircraft, owned by the Aviation Facilities Calibration Center, was flown to calibrate navigation and communication equipment at the airport, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said.
After the calibration process is completed, the airport can be used for presidential working visits, he added.
He drew attention to the significant progress in the construction of Nusantara Airport. The runway currently available has reached 2,200 x 30 meters.
Meanwhile, construction of the VVIP terminal has reached more than 90 percent completion, while work on the VIP terminal is almost 80 percent complete, according to Antara News.
President Jokowi plans to take office at IKN from September 11 to October 19 and hold a plenary cabinet meeting at the IKN Presidential Palace this week.
